A photo tent is a tool that provides diffused lighting around a subject. Manufacturers make them from many different materials, including fabric tents that pop up when taken out of a bag and plastic frames that are assembled and draped with fabric. The easiest photo tent to build is made from a cardboard box and fabric. You can make a photo tent in less than an hour for under $10. It performs as well as photo tents priced over $100.

Tape the bottom of a square box closed. The size of the box depends on the size of your subject. For small product photography, a square one-foot box works best. For larger subjects, use a larger box.
2Cut windows into three of the box's sides. Leave one to two inches of cardboard around the outside of the window.
3Tape white fabric or tracing paper over the three windows. The white fabric diffuses the light coming into the tent; this provides an even light source for illuminating your subject.
4Lay the box down on the side without a window. Cut the top and bottom flaps of the open side off. The two side flaps block light from entering your lens and creating flare.
5Tape a piece of white or black poster board into the box. Run the poster board from the bottom of the front of the box to the top of the back of the box. The poster board should start out flat---providing a surface to place the subject---and then gradually curve near the back of the box. The poster board provides a seamless bottom-to-background look.
6Set your light source off to one side of the tent. The light will illuminate the subject by penetrating the fabric on that side. The fabric on the other sides will bounce the light back to the subject and lighten the shadows.
