Mounting pictures can be done in several ways with different materials, but the most recommended method is called conservation mounting, which ensures your photos can be removed from the mat afterward without any damage. If you want to preserve the photos for as long as possible, make sure all of your materials are acid-free. This will be more costly and the process for mounting will take longer, but it's especially worthwhile if you are working with original images.
Instructions
- 1
Place your photo on a table, face up, with about 2 inches hanging over the edge of the table.
2Place a pre-cut mat over the photo and center it. It does not have to be exactly centered over the photo -- just make sure the mat overlaps the photo on all four edges.
3Cut two small pieces of acid-free tape and adhere the photo to the mat, placing one piece on each of the two corners that are hanging over the table, from below, so the tape is attaching the underside of the photo to the mat.
4Lift the mat and photo from the table and place the mounting board behind it, if you have one. It is now ready to place in a frame, if you wish.
