Portrait photographers typically light their subjects well from several different angles with soft illumination, to capture as much detail as possible without harsh shadows or angular lighting. Use a back light. Aiming a strobe at the back of the subjects head or positioning the subject so that the strongest natural light source is directly behind will leave much of the face and body in deep, harsh shadow.
2Remove light softeners. Diffusers on strobes or camera flashes, window curtains and umbrella coverings can be removed to give the subject a hard, angular light.
3Try an extreme point of view. Rather than the standard three-quarter profile or face portrait, try shooting from the subjects feet or from an angle high above the subjects face.
4Use selective lighting. You can achieve a dramatic effect by selectively lighting the subjects eyes or other facial feature, leaving the rest of the face in shadow. A well-aimed strobe or controllable natural light source, such as window blinds, can help to achieve this look.
