Printing your photos on canvas can give your art a new texture and a gallery feel. After transferring your photograph to canvas you will have to stretch the canvas across wooden stretcher bars if you want to hang it on the wall. After stretching your canvas it can be framed and hung. Or, you can use the gallery stretching method, in which you wrap a portion of the picture over the edges of the stretcher bars, and hang the photo without a frame.
Instructions
- 1
Lay your printed canvas on a clean, flat work area with the photo side facing down.
2Place a square set of wooden stretcher bars on top of the face down canvas.
3Trim the edges of the canvas leaving just enough extra material around each edge of the stretcher bars for the canvas to be wrapped around the bar. Ensure that there is the same amount of extra canvas on each side of the stretcher bars.
4Lift the sides of the stretcher bars to check if the picture is set where you want it to be on the canvas. If you are using the gallery stretch, then a portion of the picture should wrap around the edges of the stretcher bars, otherwise you should ensure that the photograph is centered in the stretcher bars.
5Fold one edge of the canvas over one edge of the stretcher bars and place a staple in the middle of the bar using a staple gun.
6Pull the opposite edge of the canvas tight and fold it over the opposite edge of the stretcher bars then staple the middle of the bar using the staple gun.
7Check the canvas to make sure the photo is still in the position you desire.
8Pull a third edge of the canvas tight and fold it over the stretcher bars stapling it in place with a single staple in the middle of the bar.
9Pull the last edge of the canvas tight and fold it over the stretcher bars putting a single staple in the middle of the bar.
10Staple along one of the stretcher bars, starting at the middle staple and going towards the corner, pulling the canvas tight as you go.
11Lift the side that is not stapled down and fold the canvas underneath when you reach the corner. Pull the folded corner tight and staple it in place.
12Continue to staple down each of the sides and corners until the canvas is secured and tight.
