How to Do Dramatic Lighting for Figure Photography

Sometimes a clean, well-lighted place for a photo is just too blah. If youre taking a portrait of a guerrilla fighter, you dont want the image to look like he walked into the local mall photographer. You want the drama of your subject to be reflected in the drama of your photograph. Dramatic lighting is lighting that achieves high contrast a distinct difference between the brightest and darkest locations of the image.

Instructions

    1

Place a single light on your subject. A single light creates shadows, which is why photographers use multiple lights and reflectors to fill the shadows when they're looking to make "undramatic," prosaic photos.

    2

Adjust the placement of the light to accentuate the dramatic features of your subject. Every option is available to you, from lighting the subject head on, to lighting it in silhouette from behind, or from straight above or straight beneath.

    3

Add a fill light or reflector. A single light may create too much contrast. To soften those shadows, you can use a lower intensity light from a different angle to lighten the darks. You can also use a reflector to shine some of the main light back into the shadows.
