Converting a collection of slides to a DVD slideshow allows one to preserve and extend the life of 35 mm slides. Many professional photographers use slide film to create images because of the stunning color quality and precise exposures the medium provides. Using a video editing program that properly fits the computer's capabilities and your technical expertise will ensure a smooth slideshow production process.
Instructions
- 1
Digitize the 35 mm slides for the DVD slideshow using a scanner or a professional scanning service found at a local photography lab. If using a scanner, ensure that the scanning device will accept the slide format and will operate properly with your existing computer.
2Create each scan with a digital resolution setting of 72 dpi, or dots per inch. Digital screen resolution refers to the amount of data present in each photo, and a lower dpi will ensure quick and clear rendering of the photo when played on a digital device, such as a computer or television screen. A dialogue box should appear from your scanning device and allow you to insert the proper scanning settings before the process begins.
3Organize the photographs into the proper order for your slideshow. The order may vary, depending on your artistic interpretation of the images. If you are using a specific order, rename the images using the confirmed order for easy organization when using the video editing software to create the slideshow. If the order is not important, simply leave the file names in their original form.
4Open the video editing program for slideshow creation, and save your project file before beginning the editing process. Video editing programs may shut down unexpectedly because they use large amounts of computer processing power, so saving the project frequently will help prevent any loss of work. A large variety of video editing programs exist, and each program functions differently, so study the manual for your program before creating your slideshow.
5Import the digital images to the proper workspace for your specific editing program. Go to File > Import, and find your digital images from the dialogue box. Most programs will have a workspace to import any digital files for the production, such as images, audio, graphics or video clips.
6Select the proper images from your editing workspace using your mouse, drag them to the timeline and release the mouse. The timeline usually resides at the bottom of the screen and contains individual sections for audio tracks and visual tracks. Insert the images in the visual or video tracks of your timeline.
7Arrange the images in the proper order, and add any transitions to enhance the slideshow. A transition will move the audience from one image to another and can be used to increase the emotional connection the viewer creates with the slideshow. The most common transition is a cross-fade, where one photograph fades into another over several seconds. Each image should remain on screen for three to four seconds.
8Export the slideshow using the program's specific instructions for exporting the highest-quality video file possible. Most standard editing programs will export in an MOV file format with the .mov file extension. The export will take the actual timeline you have created and export it as a movie file, rendering the various media to the proper playback settings. The highest-quality export will ensure an acceptable DVD playback quality.
9Open a basic DVD authoring program, and import the slideshow video file from the previous step.
10Create a menu for the DVD using the authoring program's specific instructions, which will vary with each program. Use an image from the slideshow as a background, and use the basic text tool in the authoring program to give the production a title.
11Burn the DVD slideshow using the highest-quality settings and following the instructions for the specific program. Test your slideshow on a different DVD device than your computer. Sometimes the computer that created the DVD will attempt to access the actual video file created on the computer for playback rather than the playable DVD just created.
