What Does Nonlinear Warping Mean?

Nonlinear warping is one of the more avant-garde tools in the modern art photographer's toolkit. Images can be created that range from whimsical to realistic. Available in most graphics kits, a warp is also easy to apply.

History

Old maps may seem ludicrously incorrect to the modern eye, but to the pioneers of navigation, they were irreplaceable.
Old maps may seem ludicrously incorrect to the modern eye, but to the pioneers of navigation, they were irreplaceable.

Nonlinear warping was first utilized by mapmakers. Ancient maps used often quite creative means to fit mountains into the flat page and oceans into regions that didn't have the space to leave things to scale. More modern maps apply nonlinear warping to fit larger, nonplanar sweeps of our spherical planet into squares and rectangles.

Types

A number of nonlinear warps are available to the modern artist, the most common being cylindrical and hemispherical. Most graphics packages, such as Photoshop, allow the artist to choose the diameter of the object that the image is being mapped onto, with smaller diameters resulting in a greater degree of warping of the image.

Features

Nonlinear warping can be applied regularly or irregularly to an image. Regular nonlinear warps can be applied fairly easily, with a simple calculation that can be done using any personal computer. More irregular warps are more difficult and often have to be done by hand. A variety of software programs are available to assist the modern artist with this. The most common irregular warp involves selecting a series of points and then manually moving them in relation to one another. The graphics package then fills in the remainder of the warp, creating a smoothly curved distortion.
