Still Camera Shot Ideas

In the world in which we live today, photos can be seen everywhere, from the Internet to print ads. Photos are a great way to express an idea or document something as it happens. Since the release of the first digitals cameras, photography equipment has become even more accessible to the average person. Photographers often take specific types of pictures such as landscapes, portraits, wildlife photos, and macro photos. These all make for great photo ideas and can be done by both professionals and amateurs alike.

Landscape Photography

Landscapes are some of the most popular types of photos because of their ability to capture the beauty of nature. A landscape photo is used to show large outdoor spaces that seemingly expand endlessly into the horizon. In many landscape photographs very few, if any, man-made structures are present. Any human activities are often purposefully kept out of these types of photos to convey a naturalistic feel. Some of the most photographed subjects in landscape photography include waterfalls, meadows, coastlines, and mountain ranges. Another major aspect of landscape photography is the lighting of each composition. For example, photos taken at sunrise convey a different feel than those taken at night because of the way the light bends to interact with the items in the photo. A few ideas for landscape photos include pictures of your neighborhood, a park, or playground.

Portrait Photography

Portrait photography is the most common type of photo seen throughout the world today. Portraits appear on the Internet on various websites including social networks. Portraits have been taken since the first cameras were developed during the 1800s. A portrait is a type of photograph that captures the likeness of a person and most often features a persons face and upper body. These types of photos are usually compositions that have been set up in advance. Ideas for portraits include group portraits or a photo of someone wearing their favorite outfit.

Macro Photography

The term macro photography is widely used to describe photographs of subjects that have been taken from extremely close angles. The types of photographs are often taken to enlarge incredibly small objects such as ants or even a grain of sand. Macro photography is used in everything from crime scene investigation, to marketing campaigns. This type of photography usually requires an extremely shallow depth of field where the subject is the only object in focus in the photo. Macro photography can usually only be accomplished with the use of professional SLR or DSLR cameras but on occasion can also be done with various consumer grade digital cameras that allow for the manual adjustment of the lens focus. A few ideas for macro photography would be taking a closeup of an article of clothing or getting a shot of a flower.

Wildlife Photography

Wildlife photography is a form of photography in which a photographer documents animals as they complete a portion of their daily routine. This type of photography often requires a photographer to be familiar with the type of animal they are attempting to photograph. Wildlife photography can be accomplished anywhere, from the heart of large cities, to the jungles of South America. A few ideas for wildlife photography would be getting a shot of a bird nesting in a tree or a frog in a pond.

How to Copyright a Digital Image

There are many misunderstandings and miscommunications concerning copyright in the United States. The simple fact is that the creator of the work is the owner of all copyright interests in the work. This is a matter of law under US Code Title 17. There is no requirement for registration of a copyright with the U.S. government, as there is with a trademark or patent. That said, there are a lot of websites that offer copyright registration for a fee including the U.S. Government's site. People frequently ask me if they should sign up with these sites and pay their fees. There is no simple answer to that question. According to the US code, registration meets the prima fascia case for establishing ownership; however, there are other ways to prove ownership should there be a legal contest. I am not a lawyer or an expert in copyright, but can offer some basic concepts for how to protect your content on the Internet. Read on to gain some insight and do some research on your own to get the answer to the registration question. Copyright law is complex and confusing--this article covers the basics only--but for most of us it may at least provide some clarity.

Instructions

    1
    Resolution

Understand that copyright has nothing to do with the law, but a lot to do with photography and practicality. Most websites, like eHow, limit the image size you can upload. Many sites limit the resolution to 1024 x 768 pixels. These photos will look excellent on your computer screen, but really have no other application. Anything you put on the web can be stolen, since essentially the image is being copied to your computer for viewing. These images, however, have far too little resolution to be used for print, coffee mugs or T-shirts. Never upload images larger then one megapixel, unless you are doing so to a secure stock photo site or art distribution site where they display a low-resolution image, but ship the high resolution after purchase. Consult the chart in Resources below to understand image size and resolution requirements.

    2
    Add a Watermark

Put a watermark or copyright notification on all of your images. If the copyright of an image becomes part of a legal proceeding, you may have to prove ownership in a court of law. The upload date with the copyright statement may prove valuable if you are ever engaged in such a contest.

    3
    Metadata

Use the metadata information capability on your camera. Most modern digital cameras allow you to add metadata to the image. Some allow you to do this in the camera and others in postproduction software. The metadata becomes part of the digital file, and in most cases can include the author, copyright notice, date and location. This original file with the embedded metadata would also be powerful evidence proving ownership in a court of law.

    4
    Registration

Register your copyright with a variety of online services. They are quite honest in telling you registration is not required and they do charge fees for their services. If you are lucky enough, however, to have taken a photograph of a celebrity or national event, you may want to register the photograph to assure that you meet the prima fascia case for establishing ownership. Some photographs are worth millions, and it may pay to use a registration service for this sort of image.

How to Make Photos Look Like They Are Moving

Many amateur photographs fail when trying to capture a moving object. Often the entire image comes out blurred, and the intention of displaying movement is completely unclear. Photographers make an object look like its moving by capturing the movement in sharp detail, or by blurring the moving object against a focused background or foreground to give the impression of movement. The ability to capture a moving object is determined by the shutter speed.

Instructions

    1

Place the camera on a tripod to steady it.

    2

Decide on a slow or faster shutter speed. A slower shutter speed will blur the moving object and focus the foreground or background; the blurred moving object compared to the focused foreground or background gives the illusion of movement. A faster speed will sharpen the focus on the moving object, allowing you to capture the actual movement in detail.

    3

Access the camera's menu and select either a slower or faster shutter speed. A shutter speed of 1/2000 is slower than 1/4000. Instructions for setting shutter speed vary per camera model. For certain cameras, you turn the mode dial to "S," press the "+/-" button and select the up and down buttons to choose the shutter speed.

    4

Focus the lens on the object. If blurring the moving object, focus on the foreground or background.

    5

Press the shutter to capture the moving subject.
