How to Do Backlighting for Subjects

Positioning your subject just right will make the difference between a shadowed and poorly lit photograph or a breath taking, inspirational portrait. Backlighting is the technique of positioning the sun, or artificial lighting, during the photo shoot so the light illuminates from behind the subject. Backlighting adds interest, shape and form to details that typically go unnoticed in a front-lighted photo. The techniques have the same effect whether your subject is still life, moving or posing for the portrait.

Instructions

    1

Shade the lens of the camera to avoid lens flare during the shot. Lens flare is the absorption of light by the lens that causes small circular spots of light to appear in the picture.

    2

Place the subject in front of the light. When shooting outdoors, you may need to change the angle of the shot so the sun is directly behind the subject.

    3

Place a fill light, or light reflector in front of the subject if you intend to illuminate the face, or the front side of the still object, as well. It is not necessary to light the front of the subject and using only backlighting will produce shadowing effects or a glow effect around portions of the picture.

    4

Adjust the camera so the light is hidden behind the main subject, such as behind her head.

    5

Turn off the flash if using artificial light. Using the flash will wash out the subject of your picture and remove the transparency of objects in the shot.

    6

Take the photograph with the flash as fill lighting if the sunlight is creating a shadow in front of the subject that points towards you.
