If you have smoked in your home for a long time, it is likely that the smoke has settled on many of your possessions, causing stains and odor. If you have family photographs that are not properly stored away, cigarette smoke can cause unsightly residue, and an unpleasant smell, to linger on the surface of your photos. Though it's impossible to reverse discoloration caused by smoke, you can easily remove the residue, to restore your photographs to their original shine.

Instructions

    1

Lay the photograph down face-up on a flat work surface. Dampen a cotton cloth and gently clean the surface of the photograph, to remove the smoke residue from the surface. Do not use a cloth that contain synthetic fibers, as it may scratch the surface of your photo.

    2

Place a bowl of water in your sink, directly beneath the faucet. Turn the water on cold and allow it to run at a slow, steady stream.

Place the photograph in the bowl. When photographs are developed, they are washed with water -- to remove chemicals used in the developing process -- so soaking your photograph will not harm it.

If your photograph smells strongly of cigarette smoke, it is okay to add a small amount of white vinegar to the water. White vinegar breaks down smoke particles and removes odor. Allow the photograph to rinse for several minutes.

    3

Remove the photograph from the water and hang it up to dry. Once the photograph is completely dry, inspect it to see if there are any areas where smoke residue is still apparent. If you can still see spots that appear cloudy because of the smoke on the surface, repeat steps one and two.
