What Is ISO Resolution on a Camera?

If you're starting out in photography, it's important to get a strong grasp on the basic elements, for example, how ISO affects a photo.

What is ISO?

The ISO reflects the camera's (or the film's) sensitivity to light. The ISO settings range generally from 100 to 1600; the lower the ISO, the less sensitive the sensor (or the film) is to light.

ISO Speeds

You will want to select the lowest ISO possible, because a higher ISO results in a grainier picture. However, if there are low levels of light present, using a low ISO will result in a dark photograph.

Film vs. Digital Cameras

If your camera uses film, the film already includes an ISO rating and cannot be adjusted. The most common are 100 and 200, which are best if you plan to shoot photos outdoors or in situations with a lot of light. On a digital camera, you can choose the ISO you want for each photo.

The Effect of ISO on Shutter Speed and Aperture

When you have a lower ISO, you usually will need to increase the shutter speed and lower the aperture. "Shutter speed" refers to the amount of time that a shutter is open and captures light; "aperture," also called the "F-stop," refers to the size of the lens opening.

How to Get the Best Resolution With ISO

Ideally, your resolution will be highest if you select a low ISO and a slow shutter speed. The longer that a shutter is open, the more likely the image will be blurry. In addition, you will notice the graininess of a higher ISO if you enlarge your photo. Ideally, you must select an ISO of 400 or less for a high-resolution photo.

Fun Fact

The name "ISO" refers to the International Organization for Standardization, the body that determines standardization between consumer products. The organization thought the name "ISO" would translate better in many languages than the acronym "IOS."
