The Best Nikkor Lenses

A quality lens, when used by a knowledgeable photographer, can increase the sharpness, color, clarity and overall quality of images. Nikkor lenses are designed for use on Nikon SLR cameras only. They cannot be used on Nikon point-and-shoot cameras or other brands of SLR cameras such as Canon. Each manufacturer has a unique mounting system that is not interchangeable. Many photographers find that having a minimum of one telephoto lens and one wide angle lens or appropriate zoom lenses to be the most useful.

Considerations

No one style of lens is appropriate for all projects, and it is up to the photographer to decide which lens is needed to get the desired result. The faster the lens, the lower F-stop it has. The lower the F-stop is, the more light the camera is capable of utilizing and the more versatile it will be. Price tags will reflect this. Of two lenses with the same focal length, the lens with the lower F-stop number will be more expensive. A prime lens has a fixed focal length whereas a zoom lens has a focal length range.

Telephoto

Used frequently in sports photography, a telephoto lens is classified as having a focal length of 70 mm or more. For sports such as football or soccer where the playing field is large, photographers may prefer to use Nikkor lenses starting at 300 mm and up to 600 mm to obtain clear images of players from far away. Popular Nikkor telephoto lenses include the AF-S 400 mm F2.8G VR and the AF 85 mm F1.4D IF, both of which are Nikkor's top end lenses at their respective focal lengths.

Wide Angle

A wide-angle lens has a focal length of less than 70 mm. For landscape photographers, Nikkor wide-angle lenses come with apertures as fast as F1.4, giving the photographer enough capability for almost all lighting conditions. These professional-quality lenses include the Nikkor AF-S 24mm F1.4G and the Nikkor AF-S 35mm F1.4G.

Zoom

When looking for a zoom lens, the best lenses will allow the photographer to utilize the lens's widest, or lowest aperture throughout its entire focal length. This includes the Nikkor AF-S 24-70 mm F2.8G, which is popular among wedding, landscape and portrait photographers. For wildlife or action photography, the Nikkor AF-S 70-200 mm F2.8 ED VR II should be considered.
