Photographic prints are susceptible to irreversible damage when exposed to elements like sunlight and heat. They can turn yellow in color, fade or disintegrate. If these images are not backed up digitally, they may be lost forever. Protecting your photo prints requires proper archiving, using archival quality folders, proper storage conditions and knowledgeable handling of the delicate prints.
Instructions
- 1
Store all photo prints in a room with the proper temperature and humidity. The National Archives recommends a relative humidity of 35 to 50 percent, and a temperature between 65 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Excellent storage areas include closets on the first or second floor of your home. Cellars or even finished basements are not recommended because of high humidity.
2Purchase only archival quality storage products, like photos, in which to store your prints. The National Archives of the United States has developed a test all archival quality storage products must pass called the ANSI IT9.16 Photographic Activity Test, or PAT. This test ensures that there is not a harmful level of acid or other chemicals which will quicken the deterioration of the photographs. "ANSI IT9.16" is a symbol written on all products which are safe to use.
3Store photos in separate folders, plastic protectors or album holders to keep photo paper from touching in storage. Photo paper stacks have a higher chance of developing mold than when kept protected by plastic sheeting.
4Keep photos in boxes up off the floor and away from walls. This will help protect them from water damage in the case of accidental flood or leaking pipes, and it will also keep them from being infested with rodents or insects which may eat away at the paper.
5Scan print photos and keep a digital copy backed up on an external hard drive or CDs. In case damage should come to your physical prints, you will always have a spare copy that you can print again.
