How to Organize Your Photo Portfolio

Every photographer hoping to make it as a professional compiles a sampling of his best work. This is known as a portfolio, and it is used in every branch of the arts, from painting to fashion design. A portfolio can span years, even decades, and be categorized in a variety of ways --- by geographic location, photographic genre or the type of camera used. Assembling a portfolio is a creative act in itself, so be sure to reflect upon your work and enjoy yourself in the process.

Sift through your photographic archives in search of your best work. If you shoot film, look closely at each contact sheet of negatives, and decide which frames you wish to print for your portfolio. If you are a digital shooter, click through your folders, and copy and paste the best files into a new folder entitled "Portfolio."

Prepare your photos for presentation by mounting the prints on a mat board that is of archival quality. Affix each photo to the mount using a light coating of glue; ensure that the glue stick is labeled for use in photo-specific projects. Allow the glue to set overnight.

How to Print JPEG Photos to Poster Size

Photographs can define and document your fondest memories. But for some people, a standard-sized print cannot sufficiently convey those memories. With a little research and a few clicks of your computer mouse, you can easily turn your favorite digital image into a full-size poster.

Choose the JPEG file you want to use for your poster image.

Go to Start, click on All Programs and open Windows Photo Gallery. You will need to transfer your JPEG to a blank CD-R. Click on the File tab and import the folder containing your desired image file.

After you import the folder, your images will be displayed in the main program screen. Click on your desired picture. Next, click the Burn tab and select the Data Disc option.

Insert a blank CD-R into your computers disc drive. When the Burn a Disc menu appears, enter a title for your CD. Click Next. The program will format your CD and automatically transfer your JPEG to the disc.

Place your CD in a jewel case for safety. Using a marker, label your CD with a brief title or description.

What Is Photo Safe Storage?

Photo safe storage is a method of storing and preserving printed photographs so they will remain in prime condition. Temperature in the storage area should be 65 to 70 degrees F, with moderate humidity. Storage media should be made of materials that will not contribute to deterioration.

Location

Where printed photographs are stored is of utmost importance. Basements, for example, are not prime locations as these areas are often humid and experience wide temperature swings. First floor closets are good choices because they are cool and dark and maintain even humidity.

Materials

The National Archives recommends storing photographs in plastic and paper materials that pass the ANSI IT9.16 Photographic Activity Test (PAT). This test was developed the by American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to determine whether a material will cause fading or staining. Storage materials should also meet standards described in ANSI IT9.2 Photographic Processed Films, Plates, and Papers---filing Enclosures and Storage Containers.

Paper

Two types of paper storage are available---boxes and envelopes. It is important to remember, however, not to store photographs in manila envelopes as these do not meet ANSI standards.
Photo boxes are one valid way to store prints. Look for boxes that will fit the size of prints, such as 3.5 by 5 inches or 4 by 6 inches. Photo boxes are generally made of paper. Look for boxes specially called archival or acid-free that have tight fitting lids. These types of boxes protect photos from light, pollution and similarly harmful conditions. In addition, they neutralize acid that may come into contact with the prints.

Envelopes

Acid-free papers, which include envelopes in addition to boxes, should have a rating of 7 or high on the pH scale. Paper storage materials should also be lignin-free. Avoid envelopes with center seams, as the adhesive can cause fading or staining in photographs. For envelopes with center seams, place the photo side away from the seam to avoid problems.

Plastic Enclosures

Plastic sleeves are another popular method of storing photographs, but be careful in what you choose. These should be made from uncoated pure polyethylene, polypropylene and Mylar D or Mellinex 516. All of these are stable and do not have strong odors. Avoid polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics as these can generate acids which can damage photographs. Additionally, this type of plastic can actually stick to photographic surfaces which will ruin prints.

Albums

Organizing photographs in an orderly manner is also important and one of the easiest ways to do this is to place them in an album. Remember, however, that albums should be made of archival or acid-free materials to prevent photographs from deteriorating.

How to Create a Spinning Logo From a Photo

A spinning logo created from a photo can have a very dramatic effect, and it's not difficult to create. You'll need an impressive logo to begin with, as this special effect should make people concentrate on the logo itself. It should be something that arouses people's curiosity from the start. This tutorial guides you through the steps needed to create a spinning logo using Photoshop and Movie Maker.

Decide what image you want to use for your logo. Because of copyright issues, you should use an image from your own personal photos. Name your image "PhotoLogo."

Open Photoshop import your image. Click on "File" > "Open" and select PhotoLogo. From the file menu, click "Image" > "Rotate Canvas" > "Arbitrary." Adjust the angle of the logo by selecting "CW" and typing an angle figure of 20. Click "OK." Save the image as "PhotoLogo20" by clicking "File" > "Save As" and then "Save". Leave the default options as they are, apart from moving the "Image Options" slider from "large file," on the right, to the end of the left side of the slider for "small file." Click "OK." Repeat the process of adjusting the angle of the logo by 20 degrees, and save as "PhotoLogo40." Adjust the angle again by 20 degrees and save this new file as "PhotoLogo60."

Find the Movie Maker program. Import all four images, by clicking "File" and "Import into Collections." Your logo files will appear in the "Collections" pane.

Locate the "Storyboard" pane, which is the horizontal strip underneath the "Collections" pane. Drag all your files into the "Storyboard" pane, making sure they are in the correct order. The first file should be your original logo image. Drag the same files into "Storyboard" again, but this time in reverse order starting from "LogoFile40." Your original logo image should be the last image in the "Storyboard."

Click on "File" on the Movie Maker file menu, followed by "Tools." Click on "Video Effects." The "Speed Up, Double" effect is a good effect to use to animate your images. Drag this effect onto every image once, then repeat the process three more times. This can sometimes be difficult the thinner each image gets, but use the play button on "Storyboard" to check that the images are of equal length. When you have achieved this, save your file in Movie Maker. Click "File" and scroll down the file menu. Click on "Save Movie File" to save your logo animation.

Repeat the process of adjusting the angle of the logo by 20 degrees, and save as "PhotoLogo40." Adjust the angle again by 20 degrees and save this new file as "PhotoLogo60."

Find the Movie Maker program. Import all four images, by clicking "File" and "Import into Collections." Your logo files will appear in the "Collections" pane.

Locate the "Storyboard" pane, which is the horizontal strip underneath the "Collections" pane. Drag all your files into the "Storyboard" pane, making sure they are in the correct order. The first file should be your original logo image. Drag the same files into "Storyboard" again, but this time in reverse order starting from "LogoFile40." Your original logo image should be the last image in the "Storyboard."

Click on "File" on the Movie Maker file menu, followed by "Tools." Click on "Video Effects." The "Speed Up, Double" effect is a good effect to use to animate your images. Drag this effect onto every image once, then repeat the process three more times. This can sometimes be difficult the thinner each image gets, but use the play button on "Storyboard" to check that the images are of equal length. When you have achieved this, save your file in Movie Maker. Click "File" and scroll down the file menu. Click on "Save Movie File" to save your logo animation.
