How to Use Auto-Exposure Bracketing

Exposure bracketing is a technique used by photographers to ensure proper exposure in tricky lighting situations. Many cameras have a built-in auto-exposure bracketing function that will allow you to bracket your shots with ease. Here are the steps needed to use auto-exposure bracketing.

The price of photography lighting equipment can easily equal a down payment on a house. Setting up a well-lit photograph doesn't require name-brand, expensive lights. Work lights from a hardware store are just as bright as the professional gear, cheaper and more portable. Their durability makes them versatile for setup indoors and outdoors.

Equipment

Look for 6-foot tripods with single or twin-head halogen lights, ranging from 200 to 500 watts for each bulb. The price should range from $25 to $75, at the time of publication. The tripods are bright yellow, orange or red. Clamp lights are another good option because they have a metal funnel to help direct light. At $7 to $15, they are smaller, easier to transport and have an adjustable ball joint for ideal clamping almost anywhere.

Portraits

The lighting of a portrait can change the entire mood of the photograph. For a clean look, artificial lighting from work lights fills in the shadows cast on faces indoors or outdoors. The worklights generate heat quickly, so to save portrait models from a sheen of sweat, get a budget reflector, such as a silver-colored car shade. Digital images has led millions of people to take pictures and videos that they can then upload to their personal computers. That opens up many options for digital photo and video editing. This article outlines the basic operations involved in digital editing.

Cropping and Sizing Photos

Even the most basic photo editing programs, such as those that come preloaded on many computers or as free programs included with cameras or printers, include options for cropping and sizing. Cropping involves selecting a portion of the image to be kept and discarding the rest of the original image. Cropping is useful for selecting the subject from a larger field, such as choosing a person from out of a crowd. But it also allows users to alter the framing of their images by removing the space surrounding their subject.
Most photo editing programs also allow users to alter an image's size. In some cases, sizing an image is done in conventional units (inches or centimeters). That can be useful when preparing an image for printing, especially if the final image is to be framed or placed in a photo album. Image sizing is also useful in determining optimal image quality and file size. Shrinking high resolution photos allows them to be sent via e-mail or to be posted to Web sites for online viewing.

Image Properties and Modifications

Altering an image's contrast (the difference between the darkest and lightest areas of the image), along with its brightness, can help to provide a clearer, more detailed image. This is sometimes useful to correct problems caused by automatic settings on the camera.
Color can also be adjusted via digital editing, either to achieve accurate color reproduction or to produce stylized images that are tinted a specific color.
Most photo editing programs contain some tools that allow for images to be modified. Clone tools may be useful if somebody wants to create an identical portion of the image somewhere else on the canvas (such as giving a friend two heads). Clone tools are useful for correcting scans of old photographs by fixing scratches and dust spots.
Some of the more advanced programs will also include special filters for sharpening of an image that is slightly out of focus or correcting "red eye" caused by direct flash. Although it is always beneficial to start with the best possible image, these tools are useful at preserving images with minor imperfections.

Digital editing also refers to editing video clips. Simple video-editing software comes installed on most new computers (iMovie on Macs, MovieMaker on Window). Such programs allow users to put together clips from different videos, cut clips to shorten them, add transitions and titles between clips, even add music or voice overs.
Once the editing is complete, users can export their videos to different formats, from large, high-quality DVD videos to small, low-quality movies suitable for posting to YouTube or sending via e-mail.

How to Shoot in Night & Low Lights

Taking photographs at night or in low-light situations can produce stunning images---but only with the proper shooting techniques. Whether you're capturing moonlit landscapes or photographing friends and family in low-light surroundings, by simply adjusting the shutter speed, exposure rate and other camera settings you'll create striking photographs. While the following steps have been written for digital cameras, the same principles can be applied for film cameras.

Set your camera on a tripod to stabilize the picture. Since low-light photography requires longer exposure rates, it is essential that your camera does not move to prevent image blur. Spend time finding different vantage points before altering the camera settings.

Alter the shutter speed to 1/8 of a second and then gradually work your way up to a three-second shutter speed. After taking at least three practice shots with each shutter speed, determine which one fits the look you're trying to achieve.

Use manual focus because some auto-focus features on modern digital cameras do not operate correctly in low-light or nighttime photography. After you focus on your subject, make sure the exposure bracketing is set to automatic. This will ensure that all light will be properly processed by the image sensor.

Activate the cable release option on your camera so you do not have to press the shutter button. The minimal vibration caused by pressing the shutter button can ruin long-exposure shots. If your camera does not support remote operation, set the camera timer so you do not have to touch the camera while it is capturing your images.

Take as many photographs as possible before changing positions. This is necessary because low-light photography can be tricky. Not every picture will contain the proper amount of detail or light.
