Aerial Photography Techniques

Aerial photography is used largely in the real estate arena. It also may be used for landscapes. There are many techniques to take into consideration when photographing from a fast-moving plane or helicopter.

Obstacles

You see more of the wing than the landscape in this picture.

When taking aerial photographs from an airplane, it is possible to remove the door so that the photographer can take pictures without obstruction. There is also the option of taking photographs through an open window so long as you keep the subject matter as center point.

Timing

There isn't much clarity in the landscape in this mid-day photo.

When taking aerial pictures, the earth can look quite flat during mid-day. Therefore, for the most dramatic effect, try taking photographs the hour after sunrise or the hour before sunset.

Digital Camera Techniques

When you save images in raw format, you have the ability to edit them as they come out of the camera. This type of camera can take 10 to 50 images, which is ideal for producing the "perfect picture" because you have more to choose from.

Preventing Vibration or Motion Blur

While this isn't an aerial photograph, it demonstrates motion blur.

Keep your shutter speed fast, at about 1/500th or 1/750th, and your ISO high for best results. When using a wide or telephoto lens, you may magnify the problem as well as the image. Make sure that the stabilization within your camera is turned on so it can help you obtain a clear image.

Imaging Through Haze

When you use higher contrast settings on a digital camera or develop film with a higher contrast, you have the ability to bring the subject out and away from any haze.

How to Obtain a Photography Business License

Starting your own photography business can be exciting and can lead to a lucrative career, but you must know the basics. You will need to know more about obtaining a photography business license. Here are a few steps to get you started.

Determine if your area of business is zoned for commercial use. The city will not issue you a business license if the area youre conducting business in is not zoned for your business purpose. This means that if you work out of your home, youll want to make sure that it is zoned so that you can run a business out of it. Most retail areas will obviously be zoned for business use.

How to Take Black & White Photos With Color Subjects

Color photographs can easily be converted into vintage looking black and white photos in Photoshop. You can transform the background of the photo into grayscale by desaturating it and create strong visual contrast and focus. Advanced Photoshop users can take a more hands-on approach by choosing to adjust color channels and mixers to achieve the desired gray color balance through an experimental process. For the beginner, using the "desaturate" option is the simplest method.

Instructions

Open the digital photograph file in Photoshop. Click on the "Image" option in the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Scroll down to the "Adjustments" icon, and slide your cursor onto the popup menu and down to "Desaturate" and click it. The image should become black and white and is ready to print if you don't want to make any further adjustments.

Add additional interest to your photo by preserving the color of the photo subjects while leaving the background black and white. Type "Cntrl" "A" to select the whole image. Type "Cntrl" "C" to copy the selected area, then "Cntrl" "V" to paste a duplicate image in another layer. Highlight the "non-background" layer on the layers tab. Go back through the "Image" menu to resaturate the selected layer. Click on the eraser icon in the tools menu. Select the eraser size you wish to work with based on the size of the subjects you want to leave in color.

Erase carefully around the outline of the subjects in the color layer. The black-and-white layer beneath will allow the background to reappear in black and white anywhere you erase. If you make a mistake, delete that step from the history menu. Erase all of the colored background using the eraser tool. When you have finished the image and are ready to save or print, flatten all the layers into one layer in the drop-down "Layer" menu.

How to Set Up an iSight Camera With iGlasses

All iMac computers and most Mac laptops include a built-in camera called iSight. It is a great little camera, but is flawed by the fact that Apple doesn't offer any software for controlling the camera. You can't adjust the camera except by tilting your monitor or laptop. There are no color, exposure or image controls with the camera. Fortunately though, there is a handy inexpensive utility that will allow you to control your iSight camera when you use iChat, Photobooth or other video applications. Here I will cover the basics for using this nifty utility.

Instructions

Download and install iGlasses (see link in Resources below). During the installation you can choose which applications you want to use iGlasses with. Select iChat and any other applications you may use with the iSight built-in Camera. When you launch iChat, the iGlasses application will automatically open. You can select the iGlasses control panel under the iChat VIDEO tab.

Select standard or another preset mode to work on. Explore the presets. You can choose bright, extra bright, sepia and many other presets and adjust them to your preference and lighting, then select the area you want to adjust. You can adjust exposure, color and many other image characteristics.

Most of us use our cameras from our work or home office, which usually has mixed low-level lighting. The image was too dark so I selected the super bright exposure. Now the image is perhaps too light, but I can easily adjust it with the slider. This enables you to have iChat conversations where everyone can actually see one another.

You can also zoom, pan and rotate the camera. This helps eliminate distractions during iChat conversations. No more dogs and cats walking in the background. It forces your iChat attendees to focus on you instead of what is moving in the background. This is especially useful for business conversations and training courses.
