Latvian photographer Philippe Halsman once said, "A good portrait is incredibly hard to create, there is too much temptation to pander to the individual rather than portray them as they really were." Many photographers have created great portraiture over the years, however, with subjects ranging from anonymous citizens to A-list celebrities. Some of these portrait photographs have gone beyond iconic status in the art realm to become world famous.
Afghan Girl
"Afghan Girl" is a photograph taken by journalist Steve McCurry that came to fame as a cover for "National Geographic" magazine in 1985. The picture depicts a 12-year-old girl, later identified as Sharbat Gula, who was living as a refugee in Pakistan. "National Geographic" magazine described the portrait as "captivating the world." Attempts to find the name of the girl in the photo were captured in a documentary film entitled "Search for the Afghan Girl."
Migrant Mother
Florence Owens Thompson was 32 years old when photographer Dorothea Lange took a portrait photograph of her. The picture became known as "Migrant Mother" and was seen as representative of the hardships undertaken by women and children during The Great Depression. Economist Roy Stryker described the photo as the "ultimate" depiction of the Depression. Lange's personal print of the photo sold at Christie's New York for $141,500 in 2002. Despite "Migrant Mother" being its more common name, the Library of Congress lists the photo as "Destitute pea pickers in California. Mother of seven children. Age thirty-two. Nipomo, California."
Einstein with His Tongue Out
The iconic image of the physicist Albert Einstein sticking his tongue out was captured by United Press International photographer Arthur Sasse in 1951. Sasse had been attempting to get Einstein to smile for the camera as part of a news feature on Einstein's 72nd birthday when, instead, Einstein stuck his tongue out. Einstein later said the tongue was a "gesture aimed at all of humanity." The original print of the portrait sold for $74,324 in a 2009 auction.
Farah Fawcett
Photographer Bruce McBroom took a number of photographs of actress Farah Fawcett during a 1976 photo shoot. One of them, showing Fawcett smiling at the camera while wearing a red one-piece bathing suit, went on to become one of the biggest selling posters of all-time. The poster shot Fawcett to fame and led to her role in the TV show "Charlie's Angels." Fawcett retained ownership of the image and is believed to have made millions of dollars from its reproduction rights.
