How to Build a Muslin Backdrop Stand

Muslin backdrops, made of specially dyed and patterned muslin cotton cloth and available in hundreds of colors, are the perfect backdrop for studio portraiture, and the stand is simple enough to make in your own home with materials that can be purchased from your local hardware store. This backdrop adds a professional touch to your pictures, elevating your photography to the next level. Instructions

Mix both bags of cement together according to the instructions on the package. Follow these instructions exactly, carefully measuring out the ingredients, especially the water, or the cement will not set properly. Use the shovel to stir the cement completely in the wheelbarrow.

Place both buckets onto sheets of newspaper, facing up. The newspaper will catch any spill from the cement you are about to pour. If this cement gets on the ground it can be very difficult to clean up, especially as it begins to dry.

Shovel or pour half of the mixed cement into one of the 5-gallon buckets. You do not need to pour exactly half, but make sure that the bucket is at least three-quarters full to properly hold the wooden beams you will place in it. Use the shovel to help guide the cement out of the wheelbarrow while pouring or simply shovel the cement into the bucket.

Shovel or pour the other half of the cement into the other bucket. Again, the split need not be exact, but sufficient to support the posts.

Insert one wooden pole into the center of each bucket, pushing it all the way down to create a stable footing for your stand. Push the pole down until you feel it hit the bottom of the bucket and make sure that each pole is standing as straight up as possible. If necessary, use a level to ensure that the pole is perpendicular to the floor.

Allow the cement to dry according to the instructions on the packaging.

Attach the muslin backdrop to the wooden poles using an A-clamp, which is simply a claw-shaped clamp used to secure objects, at each corner to secure the cloth. The A-clamp should be large enough to fit around the pole, and the cloth is to be placed between the ends of the jaws of the clamp to hold it in place. To attach the clamps, hold them open with one hand and fit them around the pole. With the clamp still open, place one corner of the muslin backdrop in between the jaws of the clamp and then release the A-clamp.
