How to Edit Your Photos Professionally

Professional photographers have a system for handling every picture they shoot. This system is called a Workflow, and it's a necessity for editing large groups of pictures. Some professional photographers may have 50 steps, others only a few, but certain steps exist in almost all of them. Cropping, color correction, white balance, sharpening, and organization are all elements of a proper workflow.

Instructions

    1

Organize your images. This could be as simple as keeping them all in one large folder, or as complex as sorting them by subject, date, and overall color. It's difficult to find the one image you need when there's no system to separate it from all of the similar ones taken the same day.

    2

Discard the pictures you will not use. Don't waste time running poor pictures through the workflow. Pick the best ones.

    3

Crop and align the shot. Remove distracting background elements and get closer to the subject. Many photographers prefer to crop as they shoot, but not every picture can be perfect.

    4

Correct the colors. Any light source adds color to a photo; this is called a "color cast." Some cameras filter it out automatically with the White Balance setting, but some images will still need adjustments. In Photoshop, the best place to eliminate color cast is the Variations control, in the Image menu under Adjustments. It shows a variety of images you can use to narrow down the best look. Other programs should have a similar tool.

    5

Use the Levels tool to make your images vivid. When a digital camera records a picture, it has to guess at certain things. For example, a sharp edge between two colors will look muddy or blurry, because the camera couldn't decide which color to apply. The Levels control--or the more advanced Curves control--will help remove that muddy look. If the image needs more or less color, the Saturation control will come in handy.

    6

The final step for any photo is the Unsharp Mask. Unsharp Mask finds any edge line in the picture and makes it sharper. Be careful not to over sharpen or run the unsharp mask filter multiple times because it can quickly ruin a picture.

    7

Make a backup of your finished work.
