Antique photos provide a glimpse of history and a look back at what life was like many years ago. While the world has moved on since the photo was taken, the photo itself is a frozen moment in time. But these personal or family relics eventually fade or deteriorate. In today's digital age, it is possible to restore old photos.
Instructions

Scan the original photo to make a digital copy. Use a scanner that allows you to place the photo on top of the glass; do not use a scanner that sends the photo through a copier because the movement can damage the photo.
2Download the digital copy of the old photo to your photos folder on your computer. Once the digital version of the photo is saved, put the original photo in a safe place.
3Open the digital version with a photo-editing tool such as Photoshop or Lightroom or on a website such as picnik.com. Many of these tools have automatic restoration features--a good place to start. Manually adjust the color contrast, boldness and saturation to improve the look of the photo. There is no right or wrong way to do it, so play around with the different settings until you get the effect you are going for. You can make several different edited version of the photo.
4Print out the restored photo to display in your home or office. You can order a variety of print sizes online at sites such as ritzpix.com and shutterfly.com.
