How to Photograph Large Groups

There are numerous times and reasons a person may be faced with photographing a large group of people--weddings, graduations, parties, family reunions, class photos and more. Since large groups can take up a good deal of space, framing the picture in an attractive and functional way can be challenging.

Instructions

    1

    Ask the group to coordinate their attire prior to coming to the photo shoot. Having the same color scheme or patterns generally brings the people in the photo closer together and is visually more appealing.

    Begin to arrange the people by height in rows. Vary the rows by mixing different heights so it's not a line of straight heads. Create an up and down mountain range appearance with varying lines and heights.

    If shooting outdoors wait for natural light if possible, as it will help show everyone's features better than artificial light in a large group setting. If that's not possible then use a fill light to fill in the spaces where the available natural light is absent. If shooting indoors position your subjects, then add in a mild backlight. Add fill lights as needed.

    Let your subjects move and relax within their space. Watch for shadows as the subjects move. Make adjustments with the fill lights as needed.

    Direct your subjects as to what kind of expression you want and start shooting.

How to Pose for Photographs

Whether you are a model or the subject of a snapshot, posing for photographs is an art. Not only do models have to project emotion through their face and body, they sometimes have to maintain these emotions for hours at a time. If you are an aspiring model, you will need to take convincing composite shots to be taken seriously. If you are an actor, you will need to get headshots that project your essence to directors. If you are a bride- or groom-to-be, your photographs will last a lifetime, and you should feel confident that you will look your best.

    Look at fashion magazines. Look for poses you particularly like and cut them out. Tape these images around your bathroom mirror and try to capture the same essence of the photo, paying particular attention to your eyes.

    Create interesting body shapes by paying attention to positive and negative space. The more space variations in your body shape, the better it will read on camera. If you have your hand on your hip, for example, it creates negative space in a triangle between your shoulder and your hand. Play with positive and negative space in front of a full-length mirror to create the most interesting look for your body.

    Breathe. When most individuals get their photo taken, they hold their breath and freeze while posing, creating a sterile, artificial look instead of a passionate, lively one. Remember to breathe slowly through your nose while you are posing to maintain that sparkling glow in your face and eyes.

    Close your eyes until right before the photo is taken. Your eyes will be filled with a fresher, more relaxed look. If you find yourself unable to stop blinking before a flash, the eye-closing technique will help you keep your eyes open. If you are tired after a long day of photographing, your eyes will appear more rested if you shut your eyes directly before a photograph.

    Stretch your neck. Models in photographs most often look awkward when they are holding neck tension. Roll your neck slowly back and forth while you are waiting for your next shot. Rub your neck gently with your knuckles to release any further tension. When you are ready for your next shot, you will find your entire body more relaxed as a result of your freed neck tension.

How to Frame a Landscape

In photography, framing refers to the practice of setting up a shot for the most aesthetically pleasing results. In addition to focus and subject, creating an interesting composition with proper framing is the key to a good photograph. Landscapes can be especially tricky to photograph because unlike portraits or action shots, they might not have a singular person or object as the subject. Proper framing can transform a shot from a simple photograph into a work of art.

    Remember the rule of thirds. As you look through your viewfinder, mentally divide the scene into nine pieces by imagining three horizontal lines intersecting three vertical lines. Frame interesting objects or focal points at the intersections of the lines for more dynamic compositions.

    Utilize natural objects. Overhanging tree branches can define the top of a shot or create a side border. You can also use objects in the extreme foreground of a landscape shot, like blades of grass or boulders, as a border.

    Experiment with frames not found in nature. Shoot your landscape through a door or window, or utilize columns, bridges or walkways to create a frame. If you have another person with you, shooting over the person's shoulder can give the image depth and human interest.

How to Get Amazing Scenery Photographs with a DSLR

Shooting scenic photography looks easier than it actually is. Simply standing in front of nice scenery and clicking a shutter release rarely result in a good shot. A small two-dimensional image will not convey the impressiveness of a vast natural panorama without a great deal of attention to detail. You need the right technique, composition, aperture and shutter speed to get the perfect image.

Composition

    1

    Decide what you are actually shooting. Your eye can take in everything, but your camera can't. Is the spectacular image the way rocks cluster on a hillside or the gnarled texture of a single juniper? Decide on one focal point for your image and compose around it.

    Walk around. Look at your subject from several angles. Sit on the ground. Climb up on a rock or car. Experiment with vertical and horizontal compositions. Shift position until you have the best foreground and background for your subject.

    Set your camera on a tripod. Use your zoom lens to precisely frame your subject. Look at the edges of your image to make sure you don't have partly cropped objects like half of a car or a partial tree in the sides or corners.

    Consider the sky. Unless you have spectacular clouds or sunsets, the sky should occupy no more than one third of your image.

    Avoid placing your subject in the center of the picture. Create dynamic angles rather than dividing your composition into horizontal bands.

Light

    Wait for the right light. The best photographs are usually taken in the "magical" 15 minutes just after sunrise or just before sunset. Professionals scout locations and then return the next day so that they can set up in advance 30 or 40 minutes early to maximize the number of shots they can get in perfect lighting.

    Shoot flowers in open shade or when overcast, framing your shot so no sky is included. Vegetation and wildlife look best in shadow-free light. Everything looks stunning when mist rises off a lake just at sunrise. Dramatic storm clouds give great light and skies at any time of day.

    Watch the position of the sun. Imagine that you are standing on a giant clock with your subject at 12 and you at six o'clock. You want the sun between three and five hand or seven and nine.

    Compensate for slightly back-lit subjects or ugly shadows by using fill flash set at two f-stops under ambient light. Bounce the flash off a diffuser hood for the best effect.

    Darken a hazy or overly bright sky with a polarizing or haze filter.

Camera Settings

    Single out an image by shooting a telephoto wide open, that is at its greatest possible aperture, usually under f 5.6. If you stand so that you are not focused at infinity, maximum aperture will blur everything outside your focal plane and isolate your subject.

    Create a panoramic effect by going to the opposite extreme and shooting a wide angle lens at f 22 for maximum depth of field -- as this will result in a very slow shutter speed. Mount your camera securely on its tripod and use a remote shutter release to avoid camera shake.

    Blur waterfalls with exposures of more than one second by using the minimum possible aperture on your lens and then adding a neutral density filter if necessary.
