George Eastman is best known for inventing the Kodak camera. A keen amateur photographer himself, he revolutionized photography and made the name Kodak --- a name he made up because he liked the letter K --- synonymous with cameras. Eastman was also a philanthropist who donated millions to educational institutions and as an industrialist played an important role in building up Americas chemical industry.
Early Life
George Eastman was born on July 12, 1854 in Waterville, New York. His father, George W. Eastman, ran a business college in Rochester, N.Y. The family moved to Rochester in 1859. Georges father died two years later, in 1861. George, his two older sisters and his mother, Maria, stayed in Rochester, a city with which George maintained a long-lasting relationship. George attended a public school in Rochester but dropped out of school when he was 13 to work and help his mother with her boarding house.
Early Work
Eastman worked at the Rochester Savings Bank, and by 1877 he had progressed from messenger boy to bookkeeper. He was never frivolous with money and only spent it on his hobby, which was amateur photography. While on a trip to Mackinac Island, the photographic chemicals needed for the wet plate camera process spilled in his case and ruined his clothes. This event spurred him on to invent another method of taking photos and to get rid of the cumbersome equipment, the chemicals and heavy glass plates used in the 1870s.
Experimentation
Eastman experimented with a dry plate process. He coated glass plates with gelatin and silver bromide, and he patented his coating machine in the United Kingdom in 1879 and in the United States in 1880. He sold his English patent to finance the manufacture of photographic plates at a factory in Rochester. He then tried the same coating process on paper that was rolled on spools. Eastman and William Walker designed a lightweight spool that fitted in any camera, and in 1884, Eastman started using transparent film instead of paper. In 1888, Eastman produced his first Kodak camera, which was light to carry and simple to use.
Later Life
He formed the Eastman Kodak company in 1892, with factories in Rochester, N.Y. and Harrow, England. The factories had chemical laboratories and during World War I, Eastmans company worked on a number of scientific problems and helped build the American chemicals industry into a world leader. He was the first business owner to give his workers shares in the companys profits, and he made significant endowments to the University of Rochester (Eastman School of Music), Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a number of dental schools. Eastman never married, and in 1932, after a long illness, he committed suicide because, as he said, "My work is done. Why wait?"
