Before digital photography became widespread, printing a negative in a darkroom was the most common traditional photographic method. Even now, hobbyists use this procedure, especially those who make negatives with pinhole cameras. Pinhole cameras are small containers such as oatmeal boxes with very small holes in the side. Photographic paper is inside to capture the image instead of film. Using this method, you will end up with a black and white positive image of your paper negative.

Mix the photo chemicals with water per the directions on their packages. Pour each into a plastic tray large enough to accommodate a sheet of photo paper in the darkroom. The trays should be in this order: developer, stop bath and fixer.
2Close the darkroom so that no light comes in. Use only an approved red or amber safe light when working with photo paper.
3Sandwich the paper negative with a sheet of photo paper. The image on the paper negative should face the emulsion side of the photo paper. Place the paper sandwich on a flat surface.
4Briefly turn on a white light source, such as a photographic enlarger. You could also use a regular lamp or overhead light. Expose the paper sandwich to light for just long enough to give you the desired image on the photo paper. This time will depend on the light intensity, the thickness of the paper negative and the type of photo paper you are using. You may need to make several tests using these steps to find out how long the light should be on. Exposing the paper longer leads to a darker image.
5Separate the paper sandwich. Submerge the photo paper in the developer for about two minutes. The developer time depends on the type of developer, so read the package before starting. Lift a corner of the tray slightly in rhythm to swish the developer gently over the paper. This is called agitating. You will see the image appear on the photo paper.
6Use tongs to remove the photo paper from the developer. Let excess developer drip back into the tray the place the paper into the stop bath. Submerge it and agitate the tray for one minute.
7Repeat the previous step for the fixer tray. Agitate for at least one minute. After a minute you can turn on a white light to examine the printed image.
8Wash the print in clean, running water for about five minutes to remove all chemicals. Place it on a drying rack and let it dry.
