What Is a Lenticular Cover?

Lenticular imaging is a graphics art form created by layering textured images for three-dimensional effects. Unlike traditional holograms, lenticular pictures are shot with clear plastic lens on video cameras, as opposed to lasers. The lens allow for sharp color imagery. The illusion of movement appears as the viewer moves or when the viewer moves the object bearing the lenticular print. Lenticular images are found on the covers of DVDs and magazines.

Lenticular Effects

You must apply texture to flat art, pictures and images to create three-dimensional views of the imagery. Specific lenticular effects such as pictures metamorphosing into other pictures, objects moving within pictures, flipping from one scene to another and zooming in and out of a picture for focus all depend on textures. Adding texture is as simple as placing images in front of a busy and colorful background. Busy backgrounds distract the eye, while images change from one to another.

Importance of Color

Awesome Eye lenticular imagery specialists recommend using images with varying bright colors with deep, rich tones. Just as busy backgrounds add three-dimensionality, items in the background image should generally be smaller and darker than items in images layered on top. Contrasting larger, lighter foreground images adds depth perception --- especially if they are highlighted or have shadows. Even this recommendation comes with precaution, however. Predominately dark backgrounds in colors such as black or deep navy decrease depth perception. Avoid solid background colors completely so the human eye can recognize movement and positional changes.

Adequate Print Type

The thicker the lenticular camera lens used, the larger you should make the print type to make it visible, RR Donnelley lenticular experts recommend. As a rule, lenticular lenses only show small portions of prints. Generally, do not use thin lines and fonts smaller than 14 points; when objects move on an image, small print types tend to become invisible. Lenticular lenses that record 100 lines per inch make 7-point type prints legible. In addition, the most effective fonts are sans serif types such as Futura, Helvetica, Gill Sans, Ariel, Century Gothic and Avant Garde.

Choosing Lenticular Lenses

The thickness of a lenticular lens plays an essential role in not only making printed words legible but in adequately capturing animation, motion, picture size and image orientation. For example, lenticular lithograph prints normally require lenses ranging from 10 to 33 mm. Both 14 and 23 mm lenses record 100 lines per inch, but 23 mm lenses are useful for three-dimensional images. You can record large-format images with both 20 and 33 mm lenses, but 20 mm lenses are most useful for flipping images and animation. Lenticular images on handheld objects like magazine and DVD covers are better captured with lenses ranging from 10 to 18 mm.
