Adobe Photoshop Lightroom is a software geared toward digital photographers that provides a complete and simplified digital photography work flow. Lightroom's different modules allow photographers to manage, creatively process, view, print and organize their digital images. It can also be used to create slide shows and Web photo galleries.

System requirements

The requirements for a Windows operating system are an Intel Pentium 4 processor and Windows XP with service Pack 2 or Windows Vista. Mac OS requirements include a PowerPC G4 or G5 or Intel-based processor and Mac OS X v10.4 or 10.5. With both operating systems, users must have at least 1 GB of RAM, 1 GB of available hard-disk space, a 1,024 x 768 display, and a CD-ROM drive (see References).

Library module

The Library module is the photo-management portion of Lightroom. In the Library module, photographers can view their photos, label images with keywords, see the histogram of an image and rate their photos. Users can view a single image in full screen, zooming in on the photo if desired. Another viewing option is to do a side-by-side comparison of two images or to view a grid of multiple images in thumbnails of varying sizes.

Develop module

The Develop module is the image-processing portion of Lightroom. Here photographers can make adjustments and creatively process their images. A few of the many tools available are color correction, tonal curve adjustment, noise reduction, sharpening, cropping, red eye removal and cloning tools. In this mode, users can also create preset adjustments for quick photo editing.

Slideshow module

In this module, photographers can create a slide show and view it in Lightroom or save it as an Acrobat PDF or as HTML for a Web gallery. Users can select different layout templates, choose how many images to put in each layout, adjust the size of their images, add text to their layouts and apply a variety of background colors or images. Lightroom also enables users to control the transition time of their slides and add audio to their presentation.

Print module

In the Print module, photographers can change printing options such as the page layout, image settings and the text or other objects they want to print with their images. Users have the option of printing thumbnail images, multiple images of varying sizes on a page or full-size 8 x 10 images. Users can also choose the print resolution and other printing settings.

Web module

The Web module allows photographers to create Web photo galleries of their images. These galleries are websites that display thumbnails that link to larger versions of the images. Users can choose layout templates, create a title and description of their Web photo gallery and control its overall appearance. Once users have created a Web photo gallery, they can upload it to a Web server using Lightroom's FTP capabilities.
