How to Blur Effectively in Photo Editing

Motion blur can add dynamics to a static image. Photographers will use a camera on a tripod with a slow shutter speed to make motion blur during shooting. Another shooting trick is to pan the camera with the action using a slow shutter speed during image capture. You can also add motion blur during editing to add motion to a static image. In this article I will show you how to use the BLUR filter with GIMP, however, kind in mind that Photoshop and other editing programs also offer blur tools. Read on for how to add blur to an image in post-production.

Instructions

    1
    Open Image

Find an image to experiment with that would be improved by motion blur. I always like this image of a boy snorkeling with his dog. The light, however, was wrong for the picture. You can hardly see the boy due to the heavy backlighting. I also chose this image because it has a lot of highlights, which seem to add to the blur effect. Once you have opened your image click FILTERS/BLUR to open the toolbox.

    2
    Blur Tool Box

Notice that the control panel offers a preview and three different types of blur. You need to experiment with the three types to determine which will be the best for the image. Some will allow you to center the effect at the point that you want. There are also sliders that allow you to adjust the length and angle of the blur.

    3
    Set Options

Once you have selected the type of blur that you want, then adjust the sliders and positioning of the blur. Since I selected ZOOM, I can only adjust the length of the blur and the position of the blur. I selected the center between the boy and the dog to begin the effect, then I adjusted the length until I got the effect that I wanted. It is easy to overcompensate, so use the preview window to decide how much you should adjust.

    4
    Final Image

When you are done, simply click OK. The result will be rendered in a new window allowing you to save the file under a new name. Too much blur will impact the image in a negative way. You need to experiment and make fine tune adjustments. I like this image because of what the effect does to the water and also because it minimizes the underexposure of the boy due to the backlighting.
