Photographic Portfolio Advice

A photographer's portfolio can make or break his career. A portfolio is the work sample editors and clients see before deciding whether or not to hire a photographer. Competition in photography is stiff, so a short and sweet portfolio that quickly sums up your style and expertise is key to getting work or being recognized.

Less is More

In terms of showing a portfolio, less is more. If you have two similar images, get rid of one of them. Having large amounts of images, just for the sake of having more images, is useless. Keep the length of the portfolio at 12 to 20 images. Less images leaves more to be desired and, if the person you present to wants to see more, they will ask.

Start and End With a Bang

Select your two best images to make up the start and finish of your portfolio. Place the second-best image at the start of the portfolio. End the portfolio with your strongest work. Following these guidelines creates a "hook" for viewers of your portfolio, and also leaves them with a lasting impression.

Prioritize Quality

Make every image count by including only high quality in your portfolio. Be ruthless when making your selection. Any technical errors in your images diminishes your portfolio. Have a friend or teacher, whose taste you trust, look over your images to ensure they are of high quality.
