There are a number of different ways that this can be done, all with varying amounts of effort and cost. Among the most inexpensive methods is to print your poster from a home computer and inkjet printer. This can be simply done by following a few simple steps.

Determine whether your digital photograph has enough pixels to be printed in poster size. A pixel is a piece of information the file retains to determine the colors of the photo. The more pixels the photograph has, the more information the file contains. The more pixels the photograph has will thus determine how big it can be printed. If you want to print your picture to a size of 11 inches by 14 inches, pixel dimensions should be at least 1,260 pixels by 990 pixels. A 12 inch by 18 inch photo should be at least 1,620 pixels by 1,080 pixels. A 16 inch by 20 inch photo should be at least 1,800 pixels by 1,440 pixels. A 20 inch by 30 inch photo should be at least 2,700 pixels by 1,800 pixels. Pixel count can be found by right-clicking on a file and selecting "Properties." If an image is lacking the necessary pixels, a photo-editing program such as Adobe Photoshop can be used to correct the image.
2Open the image file in your desired software such as Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft PowerPoint, or Microsoft Word.
3From the "File" menu, select "Print." After print is selected, the print command window will appear.
4Select the printer you wish to use to print your poster from the printer options listed. This should be the color printer set up to work with the computer on which you are currently working.
5Click the "Properties" button which will be located to the right of the printer selections.
6Click the tab in the upper left corner of the new window which is labeled "Layout."
7Choose the layout labeled "Poster."
8Choose the size which you want your poster to print. The sizes are listed in terms of pages. If you wish your poster to be a total of four printed pages, you would select option "2x2." Click the "OK" button when finished.
9Click "Print" to complete the printing set-up and send your image to be printed.
