Studio photographers use a variety of techniques to focus attention on the models or products they shoot. One method that removes extraneous distraction is the use of rolls of background paper, called "seamless" in the industry. While seamless paper is available in a wide range of colors, many are matched only to a limited range of subjects. For a studio operating on a budget, certain backgrounds are more adaptable.
White
Essential for high-key photography, a white background is a must-have for a studio. Uneven lighting across the background can produce gray gradients, depending on how the back light is positioned. For product shots where the background will be stripped or blended to give a "floating in space" look, evenly lit white seamless is the choice. White also has the ability to be colored with lighting gels placed over the back light.
Black
As white is crucial for high-key, black is the mainstay for low-key work. Dark gray gradients can be created in the same manner as with white backgrounds; however, these will have a gray-to-black progression instead of gray-to-white. Glassware is frequently shot on a black background with the glass showing side-mounted light reflectors to define the edge of the piece. Dramatic portrait lighting is usually best created with a dark backdrop.
Portrait Blue
A popular portrait background of the 1980s and '90s is the graduated blue background. These are generally mottled in color with deep sky blue being the main color and grays and browns used to break up the solid blue. Color in the center of the background is often lighter to make it easier to separate the portrait subject's head from the background. A contemporary update of this look is a tie-dyed muslin sheet, with color variations and wrinkled fabric breaking up the background the way gray and brown paint would previously.
Chroma-key Green
An increasing trend in digital still photography is the use of chroma-key techniques for removing or changing backgrounds. Green and blue are both used for this purpose, but the most critical aspect for effective use is controlling color spill from the background. Rather than using paper, which can be fairly reflective in this application, felt is the preferred material to reduce the effects of color spill. Careful lighting and good separation from the background also help the success of this technique.
