How to Make a Set for Boudoir Photography

Boudoir photography has always served as an opportunity for ladies to loosen up and get sensual. Otherwise strait-laced clients find new confidence when scantily clad and the camera can excellently capture this seductive power. Setting up for such a shoot can prove tricky, however. Overindulgence in the sexiness of boudoir photography is an easy trap; so is remaining too tame. Tastefulness coupled with strong collaboration can help achieve both erotic ease and respectability.

Instructions

    1

Opt for locations that are spare yet sensual. A bedroom cluttered with too many pillows or drowned in sheets and bedding of every color is not conducive to a sexy shot. Reduce this scene to just a few lush pillows and an equally attractive blanket, united in the same color palette: a clean white or a seductive ruby, for instance. Use your photographic instincts to hone in on spots that will accentuate the curves and vulnerability of the model.

    2

Aim to strike a tone for the shoot. Decide in collaboration with your model what style will act as the guide for the day's photos. A woman with child might prefer a maternity mood in which her belly will serve as the center for the camera. Clients dissatisfied with other humdrum pictures might want to strike a glamorous atmosphere, where sexiness is the primary focus. Still others will enjoy an artsy focus, where qualities like architecture and daring prove most important.

    3

Light your set simply. Pick only a few pieces of gear in which you are quite confident. The proper use of equipment and lighting will lead to the ideal result: a set which is concentrated on the model without being overly technical.

Use just a couple of softboxes set up at an angle and maybe a studio light to accent your model from behind if you're indoors.

An outdoor shoot is well lit with just a pair of folding reflectors angled to refract the light. Shoot early in the morning or in the late afternoon for outdoor boudoir shots.

    4

Rarely exclude clothing from the boudoir set. At its core, boudoir connotes provocativeness and tasteful private romance. Nudity can register as too intense for the intimacy inherent in classic boudoir. Partial clothing, with the right mood, can outdo nakedness in its allure. Always have a bra and panties, a sheer top or a nifty accessory on hand for the shoot.

    5

Emphasize privacy and comfort to your model. One of the main fears about boudoir photography is the risk of being improperly exposed during this vulnerable time. Every care should be taken to help the client relax and lend a sense of calm to the set. Cover all windows and lock doors and entryways while shooting. Be sure voyeurs and peeping Toms won't be indulged with a free view if light from a window is needed for the shoot.
