In many photos, having everything in focus from the foreground of the picture to the background makes the photo look crisp. The sharp details pop off the page. To create a sharp photo, you must maximize the critical focus by focusing the camera on your subject, control the depth-of-field, which is the area in front of and behind the area of critical focus and eliminate anything that causes camera shake.

Screw your camera onto the head of a sturdy tripod. The extra support prevents camera shake that can result in blurred photos.
2Change your camera to aperture priority. Most cameras label aperture priority mode as "A" or "Av." Check your camera's manual if yours doesn't use these labels.
3Use your aperture dial to change the aperture to 11, 16 or 22. Photographers call the aperture settings f/stops. Higher settings ranging from f/11 to f/22 create a deep depth-of-field, which helps keep everything in focus from the foreground to the background.
4Connect a shutter release cord to your camera as instructed by the manual. The shutter release cord allows you to take a picture without touching the camera.
5Activate mirror lock-up on your camera. When you take a picture, the camera's mirror quickly moves out of the way, and the movement causes camera shake. Locking the mirror up reduces the shake. All cameras are different, so check your manual for exact instructions on how to turn on mirror lock-up.
