What Is the Process to Put a Picture onto Canvas?

Creating a high-quality digital print of your photograph on canvas can give your image the look and feel of fine art. You have a few options for how to achieve this look. Make sure you take your picture using a digital camera with a high megapixel count so the image is crisp and you can enlarge it without distortion.

Camera Features

If you plan on printing a small photo, then the image quality isn't as much of an issue as if you were planning on enlarging your photograph after you printed it onto canvas. Even enlarging a photograph to the standard 8 inches by 10 inches may distort the image if the image resolution isn't high enough. If you plan on enlarging your photo to 16 inches by 20 inches or larger, you will need to take your photograph using a camera that can give you a high image resolution. Make sure you have a high-definition camera, or a camera with between five and 10 megapixels.

Canvas Paper

To print your photographs onto canvas, you need an ink-jet printer and standard-sized canvas paper, which is 8.5 inches by 11 inches. You might want to clean up your photo or enhance it using a photo-editing program. When you are finished, go into your printing options, and select the size and orientation you want your photo to be. From the printing options, select a paper quality that is thickest, like card stock. Print your photo, being careful to let the image dry face up and to not touch it while the image is wet.

Transfer Paper

Another option for printing your photograph onto canvas at home is to use transfer paper. Edit your photo in your photo-editing software, and print the image onto transfer paper, making sure not to touch the image with your fingers. Have a piece of canvas already ironed and cut to the size you want your image to be, with between 2 and 6 inches of extra canvas all the way around the edges of the canvas material so you can stretch it onto a frame. Transfer the image to the canvas, and use a staple gun to staple the canvas to wooden stretcher bars.

Professional Printing

Professional printing companies have high-quality printers and techniques available to to print photos onto canvas. You can select a local company, with the advantages being that you can support a local business and you can also ask the company for a test print of your image on bond paper. Large office supply companies and shipping companies also have printing services available. Many online companies will print your photographs onto canvas.
