A scrim consists of a light-diffusing material attached to a frame that can be used to diffuse a light that is too bright or too harsh for photography. Professional scrims can be very expensive, and can sometimes be heavy to carry around. Using inexpensive materials, you can build your own scrim that is light enough to be easily carried and can be disassembled to be stored in a bag with your other photography equipment. Choose a translucent plastic material for the scrim such as a shower curtain for best results.

Instructions

    1

Measure the translucent material's height and width. You may wish to cut your translucent material to smaller dimensions to make the scrim more compact. Subtract 3 inches from each final dimension to allow some overlap when attaching the material to the frame.

    2

Cut two pieces of PVC pipe to the height dimension from the previous step. Cut two separate pieces of PVC pipe to the width dimension from the previous step. Use the final dimensions after subtracting 3 inches.

    3

Lay out all four PVC pieces on the floor, with the two width pieces at the top and bottom, and the length pieces on the sides.

    4

Place a PVC elbow joint at each corner and insert the pipes into it so that all four pieces are connected to form a rectangular frame.

    5

Lay the translucent material over the frame and center it so that it overlaps evenly on all four sides.

    6

Wrap the extra material over the pipes and hold it into place with the large binder clips, using two clips for each pipe. Lift the scrim and hold it in front of the light to filter and diffuse the light.
