How to Make a Photography Website for Free

Photography is a growing field and many creative people are turning to taking pictures as a hobby or career. Along with proper camera equipment, computer software and knowledge about running a business, it is imperative for a photographer to have a professional, eye-catching and functional website to promote his or her work. There are many free resources for creating a personalized photography website to display your pictures and gain attention for your creativity.

Instructions

Pre-Planning

    1

Pick a selection of your best work to display on the website. If your photography is targeted toward a specific niche, such as weddings, portraits or abstract art, choose about 10 pictures that best represent your potential as a photographer. If your talents cross genres--for instance, if you take senior portraits but also shoot wildlife--choose three pictures from each category to display as samples on different pages.

    2

Draft out a sample layout on a piece of paper of how you want your website to look. Many photography websites feature a large photograph as the header and a horizontal row of links below or above the header. This creates a simple, easy-to-navigate web page that focuses more on the pictures than the website layout.

While drafting, it is helpful to also draft out the text that will be on each page to ensure readability.

    3

Select a free website hosting service that offers original options for displaying your work. Popular websites such as WordPress or Tumblr cater to photographers' needs.

Creating the Website

    4

Register on a free web service and choose a template for your site. Check the website to find the necessary file extensions for the photos before you upload them. Generally, websites require photographs saved as JPEGs.

    5

Create each page. On Wordpress, there is an option to "Add Page." Set up pages such as "About," "Services," and "Contact."

    6

Add necessary text to each page. Be sure to edit text thoroughly before publishing.

    7

Upload your photographs to the website. Free photography weblogs offer simple upload tools that pull the photographs straight from your computer. Add photos to the main page or all of the pages for a dramatic look.

    8

Create a catchy name for your website. Custom domains cost extra but a simple, memorable site address is important when promoting your website.
