Taking a picture of a large group may seem overwhelming and difficult to plan, but with proper preparation and technique, it can be simple. Choose your location and the position of your subjects carefully, and you will create a correct group picture. Large groups are often difficult to organize on the spot, so make sure you have a game plan before you actually take the picture.

Instructions

    1

Choose your location. Your location should provide enough space to fit the large group you are planning to shoot. The location can relate to your subjects. For example, if you are taking pictures of a baseball team, take pictures on the field or with a scoreboard in the background. Avoid places with many distractions. The location should also have plenty of light. If you have a very large group, such as a large family reunion or a wedding, consider a location with stairs or on a hill.

    2

Position the camera if you are using a tripod. If you are not using a tripod, you can skip to the next step. This step will dictate how you position your subjects. Position the camera in an area that faces away from the sun to avoid a glare. Elevating the camera to shoot downward at the subjects might give you a better angle to get everyone in the shot.

    3

Position the subjects. You can position people so that the tallest are in the back and the shorter people are in the front. If most of the subjects are the same height, you can have them posing differently. Some people can be standing, while others could kneel or sit. Periodically check the camera to make sure that everyone is fitting into the frame. Position people as closely as possible to allow for the maximum amount of people.

    4

Take multiple shots. If you are not using a tripod, you may elevate yourself on a ladder. Snapping multiple shots of the large group will give everyone a few chances to make a good picture. Focus the shot as close to the group as possible.
