Tinting photographs is a process that was used before the invention of color film; it is relatively easy and can be compared to coloring in a book. However, if it is your first attempt at tinting, it is best to print three or more copies of the photograph, just in case. If the photograph has been printed on fiber paper, it is set to be tinted; however, photographs printed on traditional resin-coated paper must be sprayed with Retouch, a spray available at any craft retailer. This gives the color something to grab onto to stay on the paper. It is important to stress that when tinting an image, it cannot be an ink-jet image, and it must be black and white. For beginners, it helps to start with photographs that have lower contrast and more gray scale.

- 1
Examine the printed photograph and decide which colors would look best in the image. When using tinting pens, remember that the saturation of the color increases each time it is drawn over an area. If the color is not as brilliant as it should be, run the pen over the color until it is desirable
2Create a starting point to prevent any smearing or smudging. It is best to start at one side and work toward the other, depending on hand dominance. You can always go back and fix or adjust any mistakes made. If the photograph has an area of intricate detail, start with another area of the image, just until it's easy and comfortable to tint. Color slowly until it feels more natural and comfortable. Remember that the color intensity will increase the more an area is colored. This is a great time to be creative.
3Move the print to a drying area once satisfied with the tinting outcome. Refer to the tinting pen package for drying times; just to be safe, allow 24 hours to dry.
4Protect your creation after the print is dry. Any craft store will sell a sealing spray to protect images. Use a matte spray if you have a matte finish and gloss spray for a glossy finish. Archiving sprays are also a consideration to further protect the print. These are available at all major craft stores.
