Why Organize Photos in Albums?

Many people take photos to remember important events and to provide a record of the changing faces of their friends and family. However, to be enjoyed, photos should be looked at. Often so many photos are snapped, especially in the digital age when developing is not required, that they remain unorganized. Whether a photo album is created for digital photos or prints, the organization can contribute to the appreciation of a photo collection.

Easy Retrieval

If your photos are organized into albums, it's easier to find the one shot you're looking for. This is particularly true of digital pictures which may seem very similar if not correctly identified and logged. For example, if you take a trip to Europe and place all your photos in one large folder on your computer, it may be hard to find that one shot of you and your friend in front of the Eiffel Tower that she wants a copy of. Dividing the folder into several subfolders, or albums, such as "Eiffel Tower May 3" or "Paris May 3-5" will significantly cut down on your searching time.

Tell a Story

Photos collected in an album can tell a story. A wedding photo album, given as a gift to the couple in a hard-cover book, can include early photos of the couple's first few meetings as well as friends and family. The book can end with photos of their wedding day; in essence, the album tells the story of their relationship to that point. Graduation story albums can include pictures of the graduate as a young child and teen and include academic achievement certificates such as old report cards mixed with pictures.

Share With Friends and Family

Albums arranged by subject -- for example, a particular trip, family member or pet -- can ease the process of sharing experiences with friends and family. One photo album in hard copy with chronologically-organized pictures from a trip to Paris provides a visual for a friend hearing about the trip for the first time and allows the photo-taker to recall some events she may have forgotten. Collecting photos of particular pets or family members into single albums may help the photo collection be divided as parents age and pass their memories on.

Enhance Creativity

Photo organization into albums allows for creativity. In particular, a hard-cover album can become a scrapbook of memories decorated with stickers, ribbons and inspiring quotations. A digital photo album can also be creative; using a photo modification software, a digital photo album can be a website accessible to friends and family and include decorative graphics and text.
