One of the most important aspects of good photography is having crisp, in-focus images, yet this can be one of the trickiest skills for new users to learn. With a basic knowledge of your camera and a little practice, you will be on your way to taking quality photographs.

Set your camera. Almost all cameras produced since the 1980s have an auto focus option. Using the auto focus is the most foolproof way to get sharp images.
2Choose which type of auto focus setting is right. Each camera will have very specific auto focus settings that you will need to explore, such as "closest subject priority" and "single/continuous servo." Your camera's manual will have specific directions regarding the multiple auto focus settings available on the particular model.
3Choose your focus point. When you look through the viewfinder of your camera there will be several marks (boxes, lines or brackets) in your field of vision. These are the focus points (the number can range from three to 52). When you gently press the shutter release button (on some cameras, it's halfway), the camera will highlight one of these as it focuses on a certain part of the image.
4Focus on the subject. Line up one of the focus points in the viewfinder with your subject. Press the shutter release completely to take the photograph. Your subject should be in focus.
5Listen or look for confirmation. Depending on the brand and model of your camera, there is likely some sort of confirmation that lets you know your subject is in focus. Confirmation might come by way of a beep (make sure you've adjusted your sound settings properly) or some sort of flash of color in your viewfinder. If you don't hear a beep or see the appropriate mark, you are not focused.
