Choose a cardboard box of any size for your studio or current project. You will want the box to be open on at least three sides, so leave the top flaps open and be sure the bottom is taped shut. Lay the box on its side so that the open top faces outward.
2Decide whether you want a light box with an open top or just open sides -- it depends on your preference for lighting and shooting. Mark off these two or three sides of your box with a square that is about an inch or two from the edges of the box.
3Cut out the marked areas of the box, leaving you with a solid back and bottom, the open front, and cut-outs on the sides.
4Now you will need to line the solid parts of the box with white paper. Printer paper is great for smaller boxes. For larger boxes, you can use sheets of poster paper for a smooth surface, or just use printer paper and plan to digitally edit any visible seams.
5With your paper picked out, attach it to the bottom and back with invisible tape. To get a professional, seamless look, curve the paper over the corner that joins these two sides instead of following the square edge of the box.
6Your box is ready for use! Place the object you will photograph on the white interior surface. Shine the light source of your choice through the open sides and adjust to get your desired effect.
