Documentary or photojournalism photography has many rewards. There is no "good" career, but simply what interests you. Documentary photography can be about a place, people, a culture, anything. An example of documentary photography would be National Geographic Magazine or Time. Both include articles about people, places or events. This type of photography can be very rewarding if you are the type of photographer who likes to build upon a story or to follow something over a period of time.

Documentary Photography Project

Documenting anything requires a story. Photography is no different. Often documentary photographers spend weeks, months or even years following a subject, so it is very often that the images aren't always "right now" or "immediate."

Freelance vs. Staff

Often documentary photographers do freelance work instead of being on staff, typically taking on an assignment that interests them. However, one can also be on staff and complete an assignment. Freelancers have more time to get in-depth photos that staff photographers may not have time to get.

Getting Personal

There are many amazing photographers who get directly involved in their subject's lives while documenting them. After all, when you're a part of their lives every day, it's hard not to. A documentary photographer has to be willing to dig deeper and get personal with their subjects in order to correctly document them. While similar to photojournalism, documentary photography is more than one shot of an event or a quick image of a situation. Documentary photography tells a story that only the photographer can tell.

Digital vs. Film

Photography is mostly digital now, primarily because businesses prefer to get their images immediately or process the images themselves. Documentary photography is no stranger to the digital renovation. While this type of photography can be done with film, the client may still wish to receive the images quickly (for review). Digital images can also be edited and archived easier than film.

Whatever Interests the Photographer

Again there is no "good" career in documentary photography. Like any career, it is what interests you and what you make out of it. Photography is an art. A very subjective art, and is often created from the photographer's vision more so than any outside influences. Photography in general requires patience and a can-do attitude to be successful. At any point, a photographer may be required to step out of her comfort zone and approach a situation she may be unfamiliar with. A good career in photography is any one that makes you happy and fulfills your goals.
