A great way to improve photography skills is to administer self assignments. The discipline rewards photographers with a productive way to learn new techniques by trial and error. Whether there is time to do one photography assignment a week or one a day, the consistent practice will lead to better photography results in the long term.
Working with Light
Focus one of the photography assignments on working with light. Use this opportunity to explore natural light, lighting with an auxiliary flash attached to the camera or by using available light indoors under artificial lighting conditions.
If you are accustomed to always turning your flash on indoors, try turning it off, and use window light to illuminate your subject. Experiment with their position near the window. Place the subject so they are looking out the window, so the light illuminates their face and their back falls into shadow. This brings the eye, and interest of the photo, to the person's face.
Attach an auxiliary flash or use a built-in flash on the camera, when you normally wouldn't use it. Allow the flash to fire while taking a picture of a person outdoors, in the shade. The flash will add sparkle to their eyes, and open up any shadows on their face, due to a hat or deep-set facial features.
In a brightly lit room, try taking pictures with the built-in flash turned off. This will help eliminate shadows, flat lighting and red eye. However, a cast of color will be visible on the images due to the artificial light in the room. Fluorescent bulbs will give a green or yellow hue to the image. Tungsten bulbs will give an orange glow.
Look for Color
Choose one color and look for objects that fall within a wide range of that color. This photography assignment will make the photographer look beyond common subject matter and seek out new items to photograph. For example, if the color red is chosen, a photo of a tomato sitting in a windowsill would be perfect. That image may be overlooked when focused on taking everyday pictures of people and events.
Photography Patterns
Looking beyond everyday scenes and focusing simply on patterns is a great option for a photo project. This helps a photographer look for detail and focus on lines creating imagery. If the assignment is to look for circles, the photographer may end up with images of bike tires, the tops of coffee cups or a close-up of a bowl full of grapes.
