How to Reduce Grain Size

In the age of digital photography, some photographers still prefer the look of actual film, as well as the hands-on process of developing and enlarging film by hand. While digital photography offers an unprecedented ease of image alteration, with the proper knowledge, a film photographer can take steps to compose an image before even snapping the photograph. Film grain is a common problem with analog photography, but the amount of graininess and size of the grain is relatively easy to control.

Instructions

    1

Choose a low-speed film. A sensitive film with a quick exposure time will cause a large and noticeable film grain, while decreasing the sensitivity and increasing the exposure time will significantly reduce grain size on your final photograph.

    2

Shoot at a medium exposure. Overexposed and underexposed negatives will need to be corrected for in printing by using high-contrast paper, which will increase graininess.

    3

Set your camera on a tripod so it is completely still during exposure. This allows for the longer exposure times necessary with low-speed film and also eliminates motion blur, which can be another source of film grain.

    4

Enlarge your negative to a reasonable size. The larger the final photograph is, the larger and more prominent the grain will be.
