Revolutionary War paintings comprise of some of the world's famous paintings reminiscent of the events that marked the American Revolution. They offer you a journey back to the 18th century when the American War of Independence was declared against Great Britain. Most of them are priceless works of art owned by museums

"Washington Crossing the Delaware"

This is an oil canvas painting approximately 12 feet high and 21 feet wide done by Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze in Dusseldorf, Germany, in 1851. The painting depicts a scene at the battle of Trenton on December 26, 1776 when George Washington piloted his revolutionary army across the Delaware River to an ambush attack of the Hessian and British army. This revolutionary war painting became part of Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection in 2004.

"The Declaration of Independence"

This 21 by 31 inch oil painting illustrates the presentation of the first draft of the Declaration of Independence to the Second Continental Congress. It features the images of Roger Sherman, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson (presenting the document as its chief author), as well that of Benjamin Franklin. These men comprised the committee responsible for drafting the Declaration of Independence. Trumbull was asked to do the painting by the U.S. Congress in 1817. It is an enlarged adaptation of a smaller painting of approximately 18 by 12 inches, also by Trumbull, intended to preserve images of the nation's Founding Fathers.

George Washington's Portrait

Gilbert Stuart did this revolutionary war painting in 1796. It is a full-length portrait that depicts George Washington during the last year of his presidency. The painting has been frequently called "the Lansdowne Portrait" because at first, it had served as a gift that Senator William Bingham of Pennsylvania presented to the Marquis of Lansdowne. The portrait is famous for its natural artfulness due to its sketchy painting technique that Stuart had used. The painting hangs behind the Master's Chair of Fredericksburg Lodge in Virginia.

"Surrender of Lord Cornwallis"

This oil canvas painting on display at Rotunda Capitol, takes you back to the day the Revolutionary War ended. It depicts Lord Cornwallis on a horse, on the day the British Army surrendered to American Troops in 1781 at Yorktown in Virginia. It is one of two revolutionary paintings done by John Trumbull between 1819 and 1820. Both were based on a smaller painting of 20 by 30 inches, initially completed in 1785.

How to Change the Picture in a Light Box

Light boxes provide an illuminating perspective for your artwork. Light boxes add diversity and character to any art exhibit, and are easy to maintain. Find a printing method, either with your existing tools or using a professional service experienced in adhering ink to plastic, that works for your resources. You'll find that a light box will add beauty to your space for years to come.

Instructions

Converting the Picture to a Digital File

    1

Convert the image you wish to add to the light box to a digital file using a photo scanner or an image from a digital camera. Most commercial printing companies and photo labs can scan your photo or negative at a low cost, if you do not have the necessary computer equipment.

    2

Confirm that the image is scanned or converted to a resolution of 300 DPI or larger. The larger the image resolution, the better the printing quality. Open the digital file in a photo editing software program and go to the image editing section to access the image size dialog box. You'll find the image resolution here, and can adjust it if necessary.

    3

Save the image file after making any additional edits to it. Transfer the file to a disc or jump drive, if your photo will be printed by a professional printing service.

Printing the Image

    4

Open the image file in an editing software program with printing capabilities. Most desktop publishing and photo editing programs will have this option.

    5

Print the image on a translucent paper material, such as vellum, that will work in your printer. If your printer can handle certain plastics, use a clear plastic material that is appropriate for your printer and coated to absorb photo inks. Consult a professional photo lab if you are unsure about the proper materials and absorption options for your plastic material.

    6

Adhere the translucent paper to a clear plastic surface cut to the exact specifications of the light box artwork. Most hardware stores will cut clear plastic to any size you specify.

    7

Take the digital file to a professional printer to create your artwork for the light box, if necessary. This may be the cheapest and safest option, as working with plastics and adhesives can cause damage to a printer.

Preparing the Light Box

    8

Unplug the light box and place the artwork on a flat work surface with a blanket or soft material underneath the box to prevent scratches to the artwork.

    9

Slide the front plastic piece containing the old image out of the box and place it in a secure location so the ink is not damaged during storage or transport.

    10

Take the new artwork and slide it into place at the front of the light box. Plug the box in and test the artwork to be sure the light shines through the ink properly and illuminates as desired.

A channel mixer is a tool found only in photography editing software. It is an application that allows you to virtually separate the three or four channels of a photo, and change them on a percentage scale. The use of channels changes the saturation of color depending on the channel mode. The channel mixer is primarily used for converting photos to black and white, as it allows the operator to maintain or enhance absent levels of contrast and detail. It also enhances color outputs in colored photographs the same way a colored lens filter would when attached to the lens of a camera.

Instructions

    1

Understand RGB and CMYK. At any time you can alter the mode at which your photo software processes your image. These modes include grayscale (black and white) and the color modes RGB and CMYK. RGB stands for red, green and blue, while CMYK stands for cyan, magenta, yellow and black. You can change the mode in Photoshop by clicking the "Image" bar on the top drop-down menu, and selecting "Mode." The differences between RGB and CMYK when using a channel mixer are the colors that are being manipulated. RGB is more commonly used than CMYK when adjusting color components of a photograph.

    2

In Photoshop, there are many ways in which to convert an image to black and white, and they will all produce variant results. To use the channel mixer to turn an image to black and white, first access the channel mixer screen. In the drop-down tool bar select "Image" followed by "Adjustments" followed by "Channel Mixer." A small tool pallet will appear on your screen. Before adjusting the RGB (note: you cannot use CMYK color mode to alter a photo to black and white using the channel mixer) levels, check-mark the small box at the bottom of the pallet labeled "Monochrome." This will turn the photo black and white, after which you can adjust individually the reds, greens or blues to increase or decrease the white and black contrast through the original colors (though you will only see black and white). There is no set percentage to adjust your image to, as it completely depends on the quality and original contrast of your photo. Nothing will happen to your photo until you press "OK," so take some time to experiment decreasing and increasing each percentage until the photo looks how you wish it to look.

    3

Adjusting colors. Channel mixing for color adjustment works the same way as channel mixing for colors (without going to black-and-white mode). The only difference is that you will not select the "Monochrome" feature at the bottom of the pallet. The channel mixing in color mode is less common than in monochromatic, as very slight increases in percentage are needed. Channel mixing in color mode tends to alter the realistic color balance of a photo. However, if the effect you are attempting requires the complete alteration into unnatural colors, then adjust to any degree you prefer. This can be done in either RGB or CMYK mode.

    4

Making corrections. Along with properly controlled desaturation (turning a photo black and white) and color alteration, channel mixing can accomplish specific corrections on a photo. If you are dealing with a portrait in which the model has less than perfect skin, altering the red channel will lessen if not completely diminish the appearance of skin imperfections. The blue channel will usually sharpen facial features and highlight characteristics.

Baby Photograph Ideas

Capturing young children in natural poses or complimentary lighting requires a ready camera and a large amount of free time. Everyone has a picture of the baby coming home from the hospital or in the crib for the first time. New parents want to feel their pictures are unique. For this result, it's best to think "outside the box."

Location Themes

Location themes, especially beach themes during the summer and snowy forest scenes during the winter, are very prolific and easy to find. The child is taken to a beach or out to romp in the snow, or the scene is simply set up in a photographer's studio with a backdrop and props. If the child travels often, a collage of snapshots of the baby in different countries near visible landmarks is an option.

Props

Props range from backround drops to stuffed animals, and everything in between. Props are items that are in the picture along with the baby. Babies can be posed with a favorite toy or blanket, or with holiday items like Christmas trees, Valentine's hearts or Easter eggs. If studio props are being used, it is best that they are disinfected before the baby comes in contact with them. Make certain that the photographer does this in front of you, since this crucial protective step may get accidentally passed over if the photographer is busy.

Poses

The youngest of babies will not be able to sit or lay for long in certain poses. Older children are likely to squirm away from ideal lighting or ignore props and stare away from the camera at something that has caught their eye. Poses should be captured from a child's natural state. Remember that not every baby picture must have the child staring directly at the camera with a smile on her face. A picture of a child with her back to the camera, gazing out at the ocean, can be cherished as much as a carefully manicured pose.

Colors

Care should be taken with colors when your baby is being photographed. Often-used pastels can make fair-skinned or light-haired children look like ghosts. If the backround is a pale color, try to photograph your baby with a brightly colored toy or dress him in bright colors.
