Converting the Picture to a Digital File

Convert the image you wish to add to the light box to a digital file using a photo scanner or an image from a digital camera. Most commercial printing companies and photo labs can scan your photo or negative at a low cost, if you do not have the necessary computer equipment.
2Confirm that the image is scanned or converted to a resolution of 300 DPI or larger. The larger the image resolution, the better the printing quality. Open the digital file in a photo editing software program and go to the image editing section to access the image size dialog box. You'll find the image resolution here, and can adjust it if necessary.
3Save the image file after making any additional edits to it. Transfer the file to a disc or jump drive, if your photo will be printed by a professional printing service.

5Print the image on a translucent paper material, such as vellum, that will work in your printer. If your printer can handle certain plastics, use a clear plastic material that is appropriate for your printer and coated to absorb photo inks. Consult a professional photo lab if you are unsure about the proper materials and absorption options for your plastic material.
6Adhere the translucent paper to a clear plastic surface cut to the exact specifications of the light box artwork. Most hardware stores will cut clear plastic to any size you specify.
7Take the digital file to a professional printer to create your artwork for the light box, if necessary. This may be the cheapest and safest option, as working with plastics and adhesives can cause damage to a printer.

Unplug the light box and place the artwork on a flat work surface with a blanket or soft material underneath the box to prevent scratches to the artwork.
9Slide the front plastic piece containing the old image out of the box and place it in a secure location so the ink is not damaged during storage or transport.
10Take the new artwork and slide it into place at the front of the light box. Plug the box in and test the artwork to be sure the light shines through the ink properly and illuminates as desired.
