How to Photograph a 360-Degree Panorama

Some places in the world are just too magnificent to capture in a standard camera frame. Even a panoramic lens can create issues, with its tendency to distort the horizontal. You don't need expensive equipment and years of training in the field to capture an amazing 360-degree panoramic image, though. You can do it with a few simple supplies, some basic knowledge, and a standard point-and-shoot camera.

Instructions

    1

Choose the best spot to capture your panoramic image. You want to be sure it's a place you can access easily with your entire photography kit (camera, tripod and any additional equipment you want such as extra lenses). Standing in this spot, identify any potential issues you may need to overcome. Foreground objects, for example, can create an issue called parallax error in which the shifting perspective of the camera creates images that are impossible to stitch together later.

    2

Set up your equipment. Make sure your tripod is stable and that its components move freely. The important point here is that the tripod doesn't wiggle as you turn the camera on its radius. You must be able to turn this radius without struggle. Attach your camera securely to the tripod, and you're ready to start shooting.

    3

Shoot your pictures. Take a picture and then move the camera around on its axis until only about 50 percent of the original frame remains visible in the viewfinder. Take another picture and repeat this process all the way around. You can use the autofocus feature to try to keep lighting consistent from frame to frame, but manually establishing the camera's settings is more effective.

    4

Download your images to your computer and open your photo editing software. From this point, you'll be "stitching" your images together. This can be done in any photo editing software package, but it is easier to use software specially designed for the purpose. The process is essentially overlapping two adjacent images and aligning them according to recognizable features caught in both. Once the images are aligned, you will need to adjust to achieve proper perspective.

    5

The final stage of the process is blending these overlapped images in a way that hides the seams. Once all your images have been stitched together, you will likely have a long strip of image with an uneven border. To correct this, use the crop tool to cut away the uneven edges and create the shape of your choice (typically rectangular).

How to Preserve Old Photographs & Clippings

As we move into the digital age, often we have our photos and other memories safely stored on our computer hard drives. But we also need to preserve photographs and newspaper clippings from a time before digital cameras and online newspapers. In order to best hold on to these special keepsakes, you will need to be bit more tender than with a photo memory card.

Instructions

    1

Collect the photos and clippings that you would like to save. Now is a good time to use your linen gloves if you have them. Touching photos and clippings with your bare hands could damage them further, while the linen gloves will keep the photos and clippings in a much better state. Make sure to not have clippings touch other clippings or photos, as the acid from the newsprint can be harmful to the other items.

    2

Look through your photos and clippings and decide how you would like them organized, which can depend on the nature of the collection. One option is chronological order, or you can arrange your materials by subject. Find a system that works for you, as you will be putting the clippings and photos away, and when you come back to them you will need a system in order to best find the photo or newspaper clipping you are looking for.

    3

Find a cool dark place in which to keep your photos. Too much temperature change or sunlight will hurt them in the long run. Use your sealed containers to make sure the photos and clippings are in as much of a vacuum as possible. Also, the sealed containers will keep any moisture out. Any sort of wetness is a terrible thing for an old photo or clipping. You can also use the archival sheets to separate the photos and clippings from each other. These sheets are very thin and don't contain the harmful acids of other types of paper. If sealed containers aren't for you, you can make use of archival boxes. Like the archival sheets, these boxes don't contain acids and will preserve your photos and clippings much better than traditional boxes. Once you have boxed your items up, it is time to put them in a dark, temperature-controlled space where they will be safe from the sunlight and other harmful effects.

Basic Matting Techniques for Photography

Mats are a visually pleasing way to enhance certain aspects within photographs and they can make your images stand out in the center area of surrounding frames. In addition to aesthetic functions, they also protect and preserve photographs by adding air pockets and reducing moisture over time.

Choosing the Right Shade

Use single mats in light, neutral shades with photographs because these mats easily complement a variety of frame colors and styles as well as framed images. Use darker mats if you want to pull distinct colors out of photographs that the mats will surround.

Two Mats

Use two mats to add dimension and matching hues to a framed photograph. By using a neutral-colored outer mat with a darker-colored inner mat that matches something within the photograph, you can achieve an attractive, complementary look.

Putting it Together

Pull all of the elements together by using acid-free tape to attach the print to the mat. Use a piece of tape to adhere the top portion of the photograph to the mat. Don't tape the top and bottom ends (or all sides) of the photograph to the mat because your photograph should be allowed to breathe while it sits in a frame for an extended period of time. Use acid-free foam core or manila board to enclose mats on the backside of a frame.

How to Remove Lens Blur

Quite often, when taking photos, something will happen to the photo in the process of capturing the picture. This can be a number of things, but one of the most common is blurring of the picture caused by the camera moving slightly while the shutter is open, or the subject moving when the picture is being taken. Either way, with computers and Photoshop available it is relatively easy to edit your photos, removing any blurring after they've been taken.

Instructions

    1

Upload your photos to your computer if you haven't already.

    2

Purchase or download the free trial of Adobe Photoshop CS5. Install and run Photoshop on your computer.

    3

Upload the photo(s) with lens blur to Photoshop. Open the photo you wish to remove lens blur from in Photoshop.

    4

Go to "Filter" on the Photoshop screen, then "Sharpen" and click on the "Smart Sharpen" tab. Click on the "Removal" drop-down list to the bottom-right of the "Smart Sharpen" screen. Select "Lens Blur" from the drop-down list.

About Portrait Photography Training

Becoming a portrait photographer requires an in-depth knowledge of camera techniques, an understanding of lighting and people skills. The training is similar for any type of photography with a few exceptions meant to focus the photographer on working with people and editing images with human subjects.

Camera Knowledge

Understanding how the camera works is essential to becoming a successful photographer. While this may seem obvious, many of today's portrait photographers do not understand the mechanics of their cameras and rely on the automatic modes to shoot adequate images. Understanding how to operate your camera in manual mode is essential to reaching beyond the typical image and achieving artistic results for portrait work. Portraits rely heavily on lighting, and many automatic camera modes cannot read light in the same way that the photographer's eye can understand the light source. Understand aperture, shutter speed and ISO (or film speed) and how to work your camera to balance these settings properly. Enroll in a formal workshop or classroom setting to learn the proper camera techniques and how to apply them to the portrait niche. After learning the techniques, devote a great deal of time to shooting portraits to become fluent in the manual modes of the camera.

Lighting Experience

Lighting can take an ordinary portrait and make an artistic masterpiece. Shadows, highlights, silhouettes and ambient or natural light sources are the staples to any portrait photographer's tool kit. Study the basic elements of light in a workshop or formal classroom setting to create a lighting foundation. If one plans on working in a studio or controlled light setting, with large strobes, remote flashes and reflectors, enroll in a studio lighting class or workshop to learn the techniques. The equipment can be complicated and technical, so learning from an experienced professional is strongly recommended.

Working with People

Working with people is an obvious requirement for a portrait photographer, but acquiring the skills to make someone comfortable in front of the camera is challenging. Many of the people skills gained while working in a restaurant or customer service industry can be applied to portrait photography. Learning to put people at ease through conversation, dealing with people in a professional and positive manner and making sure the customer always feels comfortable and attended to properly are all skills learned in various customer service industries and are directly applicable to portrait work. A portrait photographer must make someone comfortable quickly while operating their camera and controlling the situation being photographed. Laughter and conversation are the best methods for helping someone relax, and the service industry is one of the best place to learn these skills.

Digital Workflow

Understanding the digital work flow of images, from camera to print, is essential to being a successful portrait photographer. Photographers spend a large amount of time working with digital image files and knowing how to transfer them properly, how to archive them, where to store the files and what formats to use are essential. If the images are corrupted during this transfer process from camera to computer, a re-shoot of the portrait session will be required. When large studio portrait sessions are damaged in the computer, thousands of dollars can be lost in a re-shoot.

Photo Editing

Learning the professional photo-editing software programs is a necessary component of the photographer's training. Portrait photographers will need to understand more than the basics of professional photo editing, as working with skin tones, editing skin imperfections and correcting certain lighting situations are required for portrait photography. Learn the basics of photo editing through experience and by reading program manuals, and then enroll in a workshop or class dedicated to portrait photo editing to learn the more complicated techniques necessary to edit images of people.
