Photography Tips on Poses

When shooting portrait photography, the way a person is positioned in the picture is one of the most important aspects of what makes the portrait good, interesting or attractive. Poses have many different subtleties, which a skilled photographer should know before shooting subjects.

Basic Posing Tips

The basic tips for posing the subjects you are shooting portraits of vary based on the tone you want the portrait to convey. For all subjects, the body and the head should be facing different directions if it is a formal portrait. For a more masculine pose, tilt the top of the subject's head toward the far shoulder. For a more feminine pose, tilt the top of the subject's head toward the near shoulder. Men and women can pull off both poses, conveying interesting tones in the portrait, although women are known to be better at this type of modeling.

Hand Posing

Hand modeling is as popular as actual portrait modeling, and it sells a wide variety of products. There are specific tips for hand modeling poses. The flat surface on hands should never be shown, but the edges of the fingers should be. Also, fingers should not face into the lens, and they should be bent at all joints. Male hands should be more closed, and female hands should be more open. Fingers on any hand should never be intertwined. Despite these rules, it does depend on what you are shooting and what message you want the photo convey; rules are made to be broken.

Funny Phrases

You should take numerous photos of each subject, but you also want to inspire different facial expressions and moods for variety in each portrait. Have a series of funny phrases or interesting stories to share with your subject---things you can say right before you take the photo to make the person laugh, look shocked, look serious or look angry. This gives a wider range of photographs to choose from at the end of the photo session so you can find the ones that you believe best represent your subject.
