How to Take Pictures of Crystal

Photographing crystal can be tricky for a number of reasons. Crystal objects tend to be small, and setting your camera to the right type of focus is essential. Crystal reflects the light, so any light that you do use needs to be carefully monitored to ensure that you do not over- or under-light your object. Crystal is also white or very light in color and this can cause underexposure. All these challenges have to be faced when photographing crystal, but a good photograph can be achieved with relatively little equipment.

Instructions

    1
Crystal needs the right photographic environment to look good in an image.
Crystal needs the right photographic environment to look good in an image.

Set up your piece of jewelry or crystal object on a plain black or white backdrop. You can use a piece of material or thick paper or card for this.

    2

Set your camera up on a tripod in front or above the crystal object, depending on how you have laid it out.

    3

Turn the flash off on your camera, the flash on your camera will be too bright and will hit the crystal and cause light to bounce. This will not lead to a good, controlled image.

    4

Set up the two daylight bulbs about 4 feet away and at a 45-degree angle from the camera, this should give a soft continuous light. If this seems to bright move the lights further away.

    5

Set your camera to "spot focus," this should be found in your menu or mode settings. The spot focus will reduce the area where your camera will try to focus, making a clearer, more direct picture of smaller objects.

    6

Set your white balance to "daylight" and adjust your lens to focus in on the object. Check that you ISO setting in on 200. This setting indicates light sensitivity, and if you are using daylight bulbs you should have enough light for a low ISO.

    7

Take your pictures. You should take lots of pictures, checking them as you go. If the pictures are too dark, bring the light in closer, if it's too light, the light should be farther away. Crystal should reflect naturally in the light to give you a sparkle. If you are not getting a sparkle and it looks too flat, experiment with the angle of the lights and you should find the correct angle to suit your object.
