How to Clean a Film Scanner

If not taken care of properly, negative scanners can become dirty over time and create flaws in your scan. It's easy to spot a dirty scanner. The same set of flaws will show up on several sets of negatives. Cleaning out your negative scanner is fairly quick and with some preventative care, you can make sure to keep your negative scanner working well for a long time.

Instructions

Take your canned air, and blow it into the film scanner's slot. This will shake out any excess dirt.

If the problem is smudging and your warranty has expired, open your scanner. Turn your film scanner around so the metal plate holding it closed is exposed.

Unscrew the plate using a screwdriver, and take the cover off of the film scanner. The scanner's inner workings will now be exposed.

Find a diagram of your film scanner in its instruction manual, and locate the lens and mirror.

Locate nearby screws, and work your way to the lens and mirror, making sure to take note of your steps. You will need to know this when putting it back together.

Carefully unscrew pieces of the film scanner until you can comfortably access the mirror and lens embedded in a larger piece of the scanner. Disassemble as little as possible and make sure to leave the mirror and lens embedded in their larger pieces.

Using a blow brush, the kind used to clean negatives, gently brush off any dust on the scanning mechanisms. You can also use lens cleaning wipes to clean off the mirror while holding it from its sides. Make sure not to touch the lens or mirror directly as it can further smudge the lens.
