Construction lights are high-powered lights used to light a job site. They are typically several hundred watts and use a full spectrum metal halide bulb. Using construction lights as a strobe for photography is not isn't ideal, as the bulb is very bright. If construction lights are used, a diffuser is recommended to soften the light. A diffuser can simply be a white sheet draped in front of (but not on) the bulb's housing.
Instructions
- 1
Purchase a strobe control switch. The construction light will plug into the strobe control connected to the camera. This facilitates the strobe action. A strobe control switch can be purchased at a photography equipment supply store.
2Connect the strobe cable to the camera's "Strobe" or "Flash" out shoe. This replaces the camera's flash with a signal for the strobe control.
3Plug the other end of the strobe cable into the strobe control switch's "Camera Input" port.
4Plug the construction light into the strobe control switch.
5Plug the strobe control switch into a power outlet.
6Turn on the strobe control switch and adjust any desired settings, such as length of flash.
7Take a photo to test the strobe's action. The construction light should flash instead of the camera's flash.
