How to Test Photo Printers

If you are considering purchasing a new printer, your chief concern is how accurately the printer can render images that are true to the way they looked in your camera's viewfinder. One way that photographers do this is to print a test photo to assess the printer's capabilities. A test photo might consist of a scene in which light, shade and color tones are displayed in gradients, or it might simply contain swatches of color and lines that grow progressively lighter across a page.

Instructions

    1

Locate an appropriate photo or test pattern online. You can find many good test images by using a key word search with the words "printer test images."

    2

Insert a USB memory device into your computer's USB drive.

    3

Save the image by holding your mouse cursor over it and right-clicking the mouse.

    4

Select the "Save As" on the pull-down menu. Select the USB drive with your memory stick to save the test image to this stick.

    5

Take the stick with you to a photography or electronics store that has printers on display. Insert your memory stick into a computer that is set up with a printer on display and open the test image in the computer's photo-viewing software.

    6

Select the "Print" option from the photo viewing software. The image will print from the photo printer.

    7

Study the print to determine how closely it matches the image on your screen.
